Monster Recall
I REALLY hope this isn't in an FAQ somewhere, but I have searched and can't find the answer.
How do you maintain (IF you can) your monster recall and other settings from character to character? If I create a character that dies immediately, I have to reset everything in the Options Menu back to the way I like it - they all get reset back to default, and don't have any of the monster recall from previous characters to boot. |

Many many thanks! Now hopefully I won't have to do it again for quite a while. Maybe I will actually WIN this game for once...lol

I never load a prf file. I open the savefile of the died character. This way you get all your options as well as the monster memory of that character and his ancestors (if they were stored in the same file).

As Mondkalb implies, monster memory is only stored in the save file. If you want to keep your progress there, when you die, quit, then reload the dead player file, and start a new character. A pref file will not do this for you.
You can also save a preference file named after a class (such as Paladin.prf) and the game will automatically load it for you when you play that class. For example, you can use this to set up auto-inscriptions on different books (mage or priest). |

If you want to save monster recall across multiple simultaneous characters, copy a current (deep and much-used) save file and suicide the copied character. (There's no genuine way to share monster memory, but copy+suicide is a pretty good simulation.)

I'm not sure if this is a bug or not, but I just started a new character based on the one that just died. I reloaded the prf file and started adventuring, when I noticed that my monster memory only showed what I had killed as the new character. I then (l)ooked at a monster, and it showed me that I had killed XX number (even though it was the first time I had seen it this time through). So basically, if I attack a monster first, it starts the counter over, but if I look first, it pulls it from my previous character's memory (which is what I want). Thoughts?
Ok, nevermind my lack of perception of what is happening - it's showing me that my ancestors had killed XX number of monsters, but that since I hadn't killed any, it didn't register that way. Once I kill one, it no longer shows me how many my ancestors have killed. *sigh* Maybe I should just put the game away today since I'm clearly not thinking clearly. ![]() Last edited by miner; May 14, 2009 at 20:35. |

I though it used to simultaneously show you how much you had killed, how much your ancestors had killed, how many ancestors had died to this monster and if you avenged them.
However, I haven't seen that in current V so I guess it was in a variant (probably ToME as it's the one I've played the most). I quite liked this feature (especially the revenge part ![]()
