Tips for playing warriors?

I just lost a *really* promising High-Elf warrior to a double-breath from an ancient gold D.

While most of my detects were covered by scrolls/rods, I never did find any staves of detect evil. Is there any other means of detecting nasty monsters before you get ESP or rods of Detection? Are detect evil staves sold by the magic shop?

To be frank, I absolutely never used staves of detect evil.
Detect Monsters should find evils just as well as ESP, Detection or Detect Evil.

i don't believe those find invisible evil though that wasn't the problem here.

Detect Monsters is not available to warriors though, is it? Or was a scroll/staff added after V3.06?

One important means of detection is to use a rod of Light[beam] to light all corridors and also -Illuminate all rooms before you leave them. Then at least you see it if it tracks you down from behind.

OTOH, you should have been able to survive two breaths. That's less than 350. Presumably you waited too long to flee.

I was in one of the rooms in one those four-chambered 'pits'. Presumably it came out of one of the other rooms. I believe my max HP was 320 or so. It was a close call.

I think one lesson I am taking away from this is not to go below 1900' until I get 400HP. Might try starting with more CON as well. I was trying 18/40 STR, 18/50 DEX, 15 CON.

Then you did not really need monster detection. Magic mapping, or even door location, reveals that particular room type. Those are dangerous, and if you choose to risk them, while not necessarily a mistake, you should not be surprised if bad luck gets you killed.

I think 320 hp with a warrior that deep means you are playing a bit aggressively, in which case some deaths to bad luck are inevitable. If you have learned to see danger when 4 doors match up into the corners of a rectangle, that death was a worthwhile learning experience.

Or perhaps you needed a con ring, or to play a race with higher hp, or ... So long as you learned something and had fun doing it, there's no good reason to change and dive more slowly.

I never thought of the four-door rooms as being especially dangerous, but there do tend to be hounds in one of the rooms. I'll try avoiding them when I can't detect monsters.

Thanks Eddie

Hmm, autoroller lets me get 18/50 STR, 18/40 DEX, 18 CON.

My new character just found Haradekket, which is really nice in the early game. It's hard to resist diving when I am getting 5 blows.

I hadn't realized that the magic shop sells staves of detect evil, so I am doing better as far as that goes. Wish I could detect Water Hounds, but then neither can priest/paladin.

Pete Mack will become famous soon enough
use rods of light to illuminate hallways. Without ESP it makes a big difference vs hounds etc.
