All this is missing the point though isnt it.

Any remotely realistic scenario would circle around not having enough food on the mission, not the dangers of eating too much. And I am sure that was the original idea for roguelikes, too, and it works - in ironman. Only word of recall ruins that minigame for the default mode.

is there not also a mushroom that makes you really fast for a short time, then youre slow for a while until the side effect afterwards wears off?

i swear ive been caught by this at some point

Mushroom of sprinting. The sprinting effect stacks and lasts a long time. The slowing effect is for 50 turns.

glad you sorted it out. i too was very confused when it happened to me and your question described exactly how i felt
no status effect, not overfed, just for some reason slowed... but then it went away

This actually becomes a serious problem for my kobold necromancers, because often at some point, Vampire strike becomes their best attack option - and it nourishes and can put me into negative speed...
