"Use an item" and inscription

"Use an item" does not respect inscriptions.

I used to play a lot of DCSS, and some of the old habits are still there. Today I accidentally pressed 'X' (use an item) to look around the dungeon, which is a DCSS key binding. Some items in my inventory were used, although they were inscribed as '!d!q', '!d!r', etc. I tried '!u' but it did not work.

Is this an intended behavior, or do I miss something?

I'm pretty sure !U works to stop using and item via that key. I auto-inscribe WoR with !r!U for example.
