Borg (3.4.1) - Always a Kobold Paladin?

Hi all,

I am running the Angband Borg for version 3.4.1 on Windows (as a screensaver):

It works great and I had a fun time playing with the borg.txt. :-)

One question: the Borg always starts as a Kobold Paladin, even when I set the borg_respawn_race and class -1 (random).

Has anyone gotten the Borg to start as a different race / class combo? Am I overlooking something obvious?

Are you certain that the borg.txt is located in the correct directory and is being loaded correctly? If you have set it to reroll a random race/class, then it should do so. I worked that stuff out years ago. My first guess is that the borg.txt is not located in the correct directory or there is an error in it, so the borg code is ignoring the borg.txt and reverting to default values.

To test it, run the borg for a few steps, then hit Ctrl-Z $. The $ is a command to reload the borg.txt rules. Check your log with Ctrl-P. There should be a comment saying "Reloading the borg rules." It there is an error, it should tell you.

Keep me posted and I'll help you solve this.

Hi Andrew,

Thanks very much for the prompt reply. I assume the borg.txt was working because the speed changes I made all took effect. I did your tests, the reload appears to work.



I double checked and cheat_live = true. I then maneuvered the borg into a dangerous position and switched back to the screensaver borg. He died (see top of log) and immediately came back as another Kobold Paladin.



I attached the save file, the borg.txt and the borg-log.txt showing a lot of Kobold Paladins. :-)

OK. I found the issue and applied a fix.

While working on it, I found the unhook errors (when the borg stops running) are getting more frequent. So I will take another look at that and try to improve the game code key handling before uploading the fix.

I will post a note when I get the upload completed.

Hi Andrew,

I saw that you updated the 3.41 Borg with a note about the birth.c and "some edits to allow the normal classes to be generated as defined by the borg.txt file".

I re-installed 3.41, the Borg and the Screensaver. It still generates a Kobold Paladin every new start, and generates a Kobold Paladin when the current character dies (in the Screensaver).

I also tried setting borg_respawn_race and borg_respawn_class to "1", which should be a Half Elf Mage. No luck, it still spawned a Kobold Paladin.

Ideally I would like to screensaver to recognize the "-1" (random) respawn options, so when I let it run for a long time I can see more results than just the Kobold Paladins. :-)

I am getting bored of always watching Kobold Paladins. :-/

Don't worry. If you watch something else, you'll also get bored.

:-)

I also noticed the borg does not buy lanterns, and therefor will not dive.

I just manually jumped into a game where the borg was clvl 15 and still not going deeper than 4. I walked him to the surface and found a lantern in the "7" shop, and manually purchased it...

Maybe I should try the 3.2.0 borg?
