Unexpectedly good result from 'Create Arrows'

Apologies if this has been flagged up before, but I couldn't see anything from searching.

So I cast create arrows with a staff of holiness and got...
...an artifact ring????

Pretty sure I'm not going mad here (although it's possible) and the ring has no origin story on the Inspect screen (no 'dropped by a yeek' or 'found lying on the floor' etc.)

I have a savefile taken straight afterwards if that's any use.

Really, the origin should be the same as for scrolls of acquirement. And yes, that sure looks like a bug.

It *might* have been squelched and on the floor.
But I just tried that with a staff of the magi and just got normal arrows. :-(

I have confirmed - bug. The make_object() function can be called with an item type (in this case arrows), but before it checks that it does a check for whether to make a special artifact - which you apparently passed. So as it is, Create Arrows creates either arrows or a special artifact...

Scrolls of acquirement are magical, and acquired items are consequently listed as "conjured forth by magic", which is certainly applicable in this particular case

But is Create Arrows really magic when it works as intended, and not just mundane crafting of new arrows from the raw materials available?

Just rename the spell "Create Arrows/Ring of Power" and that's that bug dealt with.

It's magical, all right. Arrows take a lot of work to make, and require more than wood to make them. And sometimes you get ego arrows as a result.

The irony is, if I had been wearing that ring I probably wouldn't have died just now on dlvl84 when I wandered into a room full of vortices and started laying into them dismissively.
Turns out that a unique vortex is now a thing.
And it hurts.
