Warrior Question
I am sorry if this has been discused already.
What is the best way to counter the warriors lack of detection abilities. I have a rod of detect treasure and detect door/stairs. And I know detect traps is out their somewhere. Is there a rod detect monster? And at what depth do see invis and ESP start showing up? THanks |

Staves of detect evil, and detect invisible early, later rods of detection.

For detecting monsters, your options are ESP and Rods of Detection. Neither of these are really ideal -- ESP doesn't show nonliving creatures; detection has a slow recharge rate; neither shows up until midgame at best (though I did have a rogue whose first helmet found in the dungeon was of Telepathy). You're certainly unlikely to find either until well after you've gotten See Invisible and Free Action, both of which are common on artifacts and the better ego-items. There's rings for both, too, which start showing up around, oh, 700' or so? But I wouldn't let their lack slow you down; just keep diving.

It's always bugged me that staves of detect evil and detect invisible exist but there're none for detect visible.

There are also artifacts with detection (a helmet and a light source).

It's much easier to write a spell that looks for a specific magical signature (of the type given off by creatures who are either invisible or dedicated to evil) than it is to write one that detects "life" in all its glorious not-always-technically-alive-or-even-animate forms.

When you start finding *slay* ego weapons, inspect each of the *Slay* Evil and other high-end weapons. Telepathy is one of the random abilities they can have in addition to their standard abilities.

My current character is a Gnome Warrior. He dropped a big pile of gold early on for a rod of detection at the 7. Soon thereafter he found a Lead Mace of Gondolin with ESP as a random attribute. The rod of detection was more than worth the ~22k I spent on it (I was maybe CL 10 at the time). The early-midgame becomes almost laughably easy for a warrior with a rod of detection and a bit of patience.
Now CL 33 at DL 57 and desperately wishing he could find another stack of ?DeepDescent so he could get to 98 a bit more quickly... |
