Seeking advice as a rogue

Hi everyone!

I've been a lurker on this forum for a while now, and playing Angband (badly) for years. This time I decided to learn from past mistakes. Instead of dying (like always) to something silly around level 40, I'm going to ask all you fine folk for advice before I get myself killed.

Below is my character dump. I'll point out a few things:

a) i have a choice between Multi-Hued Dragon Scale Mail and the Augmented Chain Mail of Caspanion. I've preferred the former because of the resists and the fact that dragon breath is my main damage dealer to uniques, but now the monsters seem to have better resistances and confusion is more prevalent.

b) I have rings of dexterity, intelligence and constitution, and I have no idea how to choose between them. More dex seems to give me more damage output (but the difference, as far as it is right) is 12 points per turn. Con gives me about 40 more health...

c) I carry a ton of area of effect rods and wands (lighting bolts/balls and dragon's frost wand). I use that to clear rooms of minions or to get a ton of damage on hounds from afar.

d) My escapes/heals include:
i) ccw
ii) healing potions
iii) *healing* - left at home
iv) spell teleport (never have enough mana, huge fail rate)
v) staff teleport
vi) scroll teleport
vii) scroll teleport level
viii) ring of teleportation (should the staff get destroyed, and I get confused)

e) my enter-level routine is:
i) reveal monsters
ii) detect traps, doors, stairs.
iii) detect treasure
iv) haven't used detect enchantment much, should I?

f) My speed is 5, does it help at all before 10?

I would be very grateful for advice on the above issues or on general choices/situation/gameplay. I've avoided most big creatures so far. For example time/nexus=insta-leave level. Any +4000 exp monsters=insta-leave level.

Hi,

My rogue just died on dlvl 50 so I may not be the best advisor but here are a few tips:

I'd *definitely* swap to Caspanion unless you find a stash of mushrooms of clear mind or head gear with Rconf.

*Never* swap your morning star without making sure you still have a source of free action (prevents parlysis) wielded/worn.

CON >= +4 is my normal favourite ring, but if your CON is really low it may not be worth it. Ideally you want CON = 18/200 before end game.

My favourite escape is ?Destruction, then ?Teleport level. Teleport other (wand, rod) is also very useful against big uniques.

All speed you can get up to 30 is good, in fact critical for survival. 5 is much better than 0. My recent base speed was still 0 at dlvl 50 (playing v4) and that worked although I had to use ?_speed a lot and play safer than normally. I did not die of that but of getting out of escapes and too many demons in too many rooms.

Getting stunned is bad. I always chug a ?CCW or similar when stunned. Next hit may get you heavy stun or even knocked out and from there you typically die. Plasma/hellfire breath can also stun, so multiple hell hounds etc are *very* dangerous. In fact fighting hoards of monsters in an open space (except orcs and snagas) is often a very bad idea after dlvl 40-50.

Getting our of serious healing or escapes is bad. I always try to return to town before this happens but in the latest game there was this huge vault and only one more demon to kill ... one of maybe 20 really though foes including ood, but one too many is all it takes.

I would definitely use Caspanion, mostly for the CON bonus. If you can get close to 18/200 CON (or whatever the actual effective cap is, I can't remember) the HP bonus you get it very helpful. I'd focus on CON before all else.

That's a crazy lot of escapes -- I approve of your paranoia I think it's good to be that paranoid until str, dex, and con are maxed.

I can't remember what book Haste is in, but once you have it, I'd try to stay perma-hasted. Also, perma-element-protected.

Speed 5 does have a cumulative effect over the course of many turns - you should double up on speed 0 monsters every couple of turns or so.

The problem with switching to Caspanion is that the MHDSM is his only source of a few basic resists. Caspanion is indeed very nice, though, so if you can cover those resists elsewhere (ideally via a Shield of Resistance), it's almost certainly worth swapping in.

Be on the lookout for light weapons with high damage bonuses. Your morningstar isn't terrible, but you're not achieving max blows with it (your max is 5) and its slays are not very useful.

Rogues are one of the best melee fighters in the game -- on par with paladins and fairly close behind warriors (except the warrior's max blows is 6). Your capability with missile weapons is also good. You should be relying on those rather than magic devices for most of your damage, if only because bolts take up less room in your inventory.

Some other things that come to mind:

* Rods of Curing are broadly useless. They have a failure rate, which goes up when you're blind/confused/hallucinating, and the situations where you most want status ailment recovery are ones in which you're likely to get those ailments back shortly after curing them (during which the rod is still recharging).
* Carry 15 Cure Critical Wounds at least. They'll cure status ailments for you, guaranteed, and can be spammed as an emergency source of hitpoints. Just phase door away first...
* Speaking of which, carry at least 15 Scrolls of Phase Door as well. Never heal hitpoints while in melee because you're just giving the enemy free hits on you. More importantly, Phase Door + Crossbow = easy whittling down of enemy HP. On that note...
* Why are you carrying arrows in your quiver when your launcher is a crossbow?
* Also, I strongly doubt that Ring of Teleportation still counts as a viable escape at this depth. Way too unreliable. Carry a second or third Staff of Teleport instead.

Regarding your question, Detect Enchantment is strictly worse than Detect Objects.

Why not make these rods/staffs 0% fail, even when confused (special case if necessary). Would that make them too good, or just barely useful?

By comparison with CSW/CCW, they'd be just barely useful. If those potions weren't available in the shops, then they'd be commonly useful.

Thanks a lot for all the great feedback! There was a lot I had not thought about before, so I'll switch up my play.

I'm guessing the general idea that I get from the posts is to spend more time around 40 dl until I have a shield of resists so I can put on Caspanion and a better sword (this one's slays are barely useful on dl 40 as I still get a ton of trolls and giants). Then I'll head lower.

To answer a few specific questions:

a) arrows in quiver: just in case I get a better bow. I don't get a penalty for them, so why not, I guess.
b) I buy every CCW I get my hands on, I think my problem was not utilizing phase door and wasting a lot of CCW's in the past.
c) On phase door, I love the combination of PD and missile weapons, I just used all my PD on Mim. The rod of teleport other works pretty well for the same purpose. Finished him off with that.
d) I do have several staffs of teleport, I guess I can forego my ring of teleportation (a desperation move if I ever saw one...)

For future reference, it's a good idea to post your dumps when your character is just about to head into the dungeon, so we can see what consumables and swap gear you're taking with you.

Thanks to the advice from all the fine folk above, my character Ghanbur is still alive and kicking. As end-game nears, I thought I'd get a bit more feedback.

I found Ringil and that made my oh so much easier. Yet, I am scared about big breathers (I only recently found that Great Wyrm's of things I can double resist (item + spell) are relatively harmless).

I still avoid fighting big breathers of things I only single-resist. (I'm currently hunted by Ungoliant on every level, it can take away half my health in one breath and I can't kill it fast enough with my bow without losing all my potions of healing. Close range combat is out of the question due to reduce strength (I do not have anything that sustains STR or CON.)

But my more general question is whether you can see any big holes in my character that I need to fill before heading deeper/facing some unique's. For example, I have not yet dared fight the Lernean Hydra because I do not know if some of its breaths might insta-kill me.

Another note, my usual spell-spam is
a) Shield
b) Resistances
c) Speed (up to 34)
d) Reveal monsters
e) Find traps...

Anything else I should use?
