The backlash against this kind of thing is one of the main reasons why some players advocate automatically spoiling monster memory in Angband. It's one of the few areas where a lack of knowledge makes a huge difference between newbie play and veteran play.
Nethack also has three places where you can get stuck/killed if you don't know what you are doing: Medusa, Castle and entrance to hell (at least. Been quite a long time since I have last time played NH).

As i recall, hell, now gehenomm, isn't deadly from fire anymore. I never knew the castle could stuck/kill you (save if you blocked each trapdoor) Medusa is instant death, that's true.

About the adomian cat lord : It's pretty better to kill as many cats as possible... i remember him being on of the few critters capable of giving less than 1k experience due to overflow...

Btw cat lord in ADOM was nice source of exp, something like clvl from 38 to 45 in one kill, if you killed 200+ cats.

That requires spoilage in the opposite direction though - spoilage on the achilles' heels that can be exploited to kill the manner of beefed-up Cat Lord that gives that kind of XP.

Not that you were claiming otherwise!

There's also, to my mind, a big difference between the general "drolems breathe poison, surprise surprise" and "if you've killed 50 cats, FLEE from the cat lord". The one is very much within the normal scope and principles of the game; the other isn't. It's much more of a trick.

Now, OK, easter eggs are cool in a game...but easter eggs, by definition, do NOT dramatically impact game play, so the kinds of things Derakon mentioned, don't qualify as easter eggs. Also: is there ANY case where something like "write Elbereth in the sand" is ever hinted? If not, it's not a veteran's move to do this; it's a pure, spoiler-only *trick*, and nothing more, because it can't be learned through play.

Sokoban. A puzzle place (the aim of the puzzle being obvious when you see it) and the reward is placed on somewhere where there is a permanent engraved Elbereth. And since you have to fight a room full of monsters where that reward is placed, people wonder why the reward wasn't picked up, or why they don't get attacked when standing on the already made elbereth square.

Concerning the cat lord, you often get a message among the lines of an angry roar coming from below when you kill a cat. The message only appears once, so you don't get spammed by it when killing cats. Maybe the mad ministrel/ fortune cookies have a say on this, but i'm not sure.

Curiosity and experimentation are *heavily* recommended in nethack and adom. There's just not too much to experiment on in Angband, it's straightforward.
