Software aid for late night (angband) sessions
I installed this blue-light filter a few weeks ago, to reduce the impact of computer monitor glare on sleep cycles. I can really tell the difference; getting to sleep earlier and more reliably.
https://justgetflux.com/ Strongly recommended for late night computer use (though not for angband so much, since the screen is mostly black.) If you do use it with angband, you may need a different color for dark blue, since the default is hard to see with the blue filter enabled. |

I stand by f.lux, it's great. After long enough using it, it's just normal, and having it off is way too bright/blue at night
![]() You can change how orange it makes the screen too (and it's a HUGE range), and temporarily turn it off if you need to.

Yeah the first few nights i'd be turning it off regularly, because the color looked a bit too red. Now when I turn it off, the color looks too blue.

I've heard about this type of thing, but is there actual good evidence for its efficacy?

For this app in particular? I don't know. For blue light in general? Yes. There are a lot of studies. Here's a review paper
http://www.health.harvard.edu/stayin...as-a-dark-side Edit: the reason I posted this here is because of somewhat frequent stories about late night angband games. If you are switching to a web browser while playing, this app is may help. Last edited by Pete Mack; April 9, 2017 at 19:30. |

The evidence as reported is pretty strong. Or you can just try it and decide for yourself.

I'm going to consider using this at some point. What settings have you all used for f.lux?

I just make sure my slider is unlocked to the full range (by default it limits the range to be less aggressive in its tinting) and then tweak it at need. At this very moment I have it to 3400k but that's not a fixed value for me. Forewarning: the angband dark blue can sometimes be very hard to see since f.lux is filters out most of your blue light.

Initially I set it to 3700 or so, because 3400 is pretty red. After I got used to it I turned it down to 3400. But then I realized I was setting the screen brightness higher to compensate, and turned it back to 3700. So: 3700-3800.
