YAWP: fast HE rogue

Been trying to figure out how quickly it is possible to win. Getting to DL20 can take >100k turns by exploring levels looking for stairs, but continuous stair scumming can significantly reduce that. Also, since progressing through the game can be more about getting good items and less about killing lots of monsters, a rogue seems to be the ideal class due to high stealth, but more importantly, infinite treasure detection. This attempt was successful in 165k game turns.

More details can be found in the ladder post here: http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=10881 Ignore the first comment, as I accidentally overwrote an earlier warrior character who didn't make it but found a nifty early drop.

Edit: copy paste error on link fixed

Looks like it should have been http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=10881

That's vanilla HiElf Rogue winner with 165107 turns.

Thanks timo. Sorry that was a bad copy/paste job on my part. I fixed the original post.

Another attempt, this time with cheat option A enabled, which shows a list of OOD items, ego items, and artifacts that are created upon level creation.

87k turns. Very lucky (or sufficient scumming) with early speed items. I don't think I could make too much more of an improvement over this.

OMG! This is even more impressive than your win. Good job to both of you!

Take a look at the ultimate diving win

Less than 86k turns without ever taking stairs upwards, but with small levels.

I have absolutely no feel for NPPAngband... would that have been harder, or easier, to do in Vanilla?

Monsters are tougher in NPP. Randarts are different, but I don't know which game is more likely to produce something ridiculously overpowered. What made it possible was a setting for always producing small levels, which is not in V. I think that in addition to the area being small, there are other diffs such as monster detection range decrease, but I am not sure and do not remember any details.
