Last week was spent adding weather. Yesterday I made sure that the player can't leave the arena. It'd be a little implausible to put up permanent walls all around the open ocean, so I had to get a little more inventive.

Maybe, but naval mines are a thing that exists, and automatically destroying any ship that tries to leave the combat arena under the pretext that it ran into a dense cluster of them would probably suit your purposes.

This is true, and plenty of games have gone that route with e.g. giant fish that eat you if you stray too far, or an invisible sniper that one-shots you, etc. They're a bit immersion-breaking; I honestly rather like the solution I implemented as it implies, sure, you got away from the fight, but in doing so you've given up what you were fighting for.
