Question regarding play mechanics

I've been looking for a description for some of the items on the screen, for example, the changing asterisks that show up on the left side under my info, the "abcdefghijkl@* in the player stats, and the symbols just under my gold and above my strength on the main screen. I haven't been able to locate something with a complete explanation for that, as well as a few other things I am wondering about. I've checked all the help and FAQ files I could find to no avail. I used to play Rogue and Moria over 15 years ago, and while a lot has stayed the same (and improved), I just need to find some info on the new features so I can jump back in.

Thanks!

Not sure on the asterisks. Never noticed any in info, except from the asterisks which appear when you get max out stats. . But the abcdefghijkl@ lines correspond to your equipment slots - if the item equipped in slot 'X' gives a certain property, you get a plus in the appropriate spot in the chart. Stat bonuses provide numbers in that chart, and sustains just show an S.

The symbols below your gold again correspond to your equipment, displaying the symbols of the various gear you have equipped.

Here is an example of the asterisks I am referring to. Look at the purple one on the left side at the bottom.

Those show the health of the monster you are currently targeting or fighting. Blue means sleeping, purple means frightened. Each star represents 1/10 of his HP.

And brown means confused. There was also another color that meant stunning... was it teal?

I've been playing Posband a lot lately, and it shows stunning or confusion as
[sss-------] or [ccc-------] rather than just [***-------]
in particular colors. Would it make sense to do this in Vanilla as well? It seems more intuitive to me.

The only thing I can think might be problematic is what to show if monster has multiple effects.

What do you do when it only has 10% hitpoints left?

Option A: Cycle the letters along.

Option B: Who cares? It's only got 10% hitpoints left - you might as well just hit it on the head.
