Advice - never made it this far

I attached my character dump (not sure if attaching is the right thing here?) and I have two questions.
  1. I'm a 19th level Ranger and can learn two more spells, but none of the four books I have are suitable (Magic for Beginners, Conjurings and Tricks, Incantations and Illusions, and Sorcery and Evocation). I was expecting to learn spells from Incantations and Illusions - the last book I gained from at 18th level. What gives?
  2. How is this progress? I've not made it this far, and this character has not been restored from a save file, so I'm feeling good about progress - but have nothing to compare against.

Thanks for any advice!

There are books you haven't found yet which contain the spells you can learn.

You're doing well - one more level and your shots will double. Given that you have a rather excellent bow, you'll suddenly find yourself doing twice as much damage, and you'll probably want to dive a little deeper to find some better gear. You can afford to dive to 1500' (level 30), but be a little careful when going beyond there for the first time - around level 33-35 you start to meet some quite nasty things. In packs.

1) you need dungeon book, one of the five.

2) very good bow. At clvl 20 you gain extra shot with it, so don't lose that.
You might want to use that HA weapon soon. As dunadan you don't have either Infravision or See Invisible, so monsters that are invisible will be problem without SI. You should prefer your bow over melee against most monsters so get a lot of arrows. As you see that bow already does almost double damage compared to your melee, and after just one clvl it does quadruple damage, so HA damage doesn't matter much, you should be using that bow against anything and everything (unless it is a weakling that dies easily with melee).

What you lack is escapes. At minimum you need to carry around 15 or more Phase door scrolls, and if you can afford get yourself a nice stack of teleport scrolls and/or teleport staff as well. Without escapes you won't survive very long.

Thanks - hope I come across those books soonish! Just cleared level 25 and still no sign of them. Appreciate the responses, Timo and Magnate

Don't hold your breath - I think the first one appears around level 40 or so. But you definitely have enough firepower to dive down there - if you have decent detection and escapes.

Normally I'd advise that you just say f it and just go as deep as fast as you can taking out only the monsters that you are %100 sure that you can kill with ease and avoid anything that a) summons b) is faster than you and c) is way stronger than you. But if you don't have a lot of experience I'd take it really slowly and at least for the next few levels try to gain a level before you go deeper. It will give you a chance to see how the game works and you won't run into anything that can insta kill you. BTW if you don't have free action ...get it! ANd I'd get a staff of teleportation if you don't res blindness and confusion. A lot of monsters can just keep confusing you and you will get killed if you can't get away. also phase door scrolls are good for keeping strong monsters out of hand to hand while you shoot them to death. I'd load up on arrows btw. Oh and I'd wear the other artifact gloves because you get a hand to hand bonus with them and you already have res fire.

Good luck!
