Question Return to roguelike, basic problem

So, I was a Moria player (like kept an old laptop to play on system 9).

Decided to try this out and I'm stumped.

I sold the first fruits of a dungeon dive, and well, no money was added to my purse! I made sure I sold it didn't give it.

????

Birth option no selling is default. Turn it off during character creation or play with it on. Improves money drops and stacks to minimize tedium

Try playing without selling. It saves time, effort, and the dungeon will reward you with more $$ to make up for it.

Oh. So your only gold to buy things is from "loose change" or mining in the dungeon? That seems like a very tedious way to accumulate enough wealth to buy better stuff. I guess I'll try it that way. I'll admit I played Moria as a grind, lots of loot accumulation to sell and over-equip/power my character to near-invulnerability.

What do you do in "no-sell mode" when you are picking up great/valuable (but redundant) stuff "lower down" if you don't hold and sell them for armor enchantments, attribute potions, etc.?

Note that you get considerably more gold from gold drops when in no-selling mode. The goal was to provide a roughly similar amount of gold as a selling player would have in a "typical" game with minimal grinding.

It actually removes the tedium of collecting crappy magical items to sell in town. When you find an item, if it's not useful, you just leave it behind. No need to load yourself down with stuff you aren't actually going to use, no need to spend all your time optimizing the value of your pack. It's very liberating. And once you play this way, you'll start noticing how horrible all those other games that don't have similar modes are, where you find a "valuable" item, and immediately have to spend the next couple of minutes sorting through your pack to find the least-valuable collection of crap in there that you can drop to make room for the new crap that has a higher resale value.

and when you burn through half your stack of potions and good gear to get to that -9 feeling item, and you find you cannot sell it and convert it into new gear you actually need, you're gonna go back to sell_on.

No-selling isn't for everyone, no, but I do really encourage people to try it out before making a decision.

Once you've made that decision, well, then go ahead! It's an option for a reason: people feel strongly about both play modes.

Thanks for the input everybody. I'll try the no sell way, as I do remember the end of the weight limit picking and choosing.

When I play (and I am by no means an expert), by the time I'm finding items anywhere near that good, if I can't use it, I also can't use anything the shops sell, except for maybe potions in the black market.

Not a chance! Though, I admit when no-selling first started I was a skeptic. Now, when, for example, Gwarl does a comp with Selling engaged, it is just annoying. No Selling is far and away the better choice.
