I guess not having to pick it up and carry around the corner to affect some monster does save on tedium.

Change or not, I won't mind. No real gameplay effect for me. Can distinguish Disable Traps from ts ray. All others identify with or without having one monster around to zap at.

With rods you don't loose charges trying to identify it, so I think the advantage of auto-ID is minimal.

Personally I'd prefer rods not auto id'ing to be left alone. It does seem pretty reasonable to keep the power level of Gnomes in check in this regard; lore considerations not withstanding.

Or dragon breath potion - wand. If it does the same, the device type that delivers the effect wouldnt matter.

Hear Hear!

Especially "Detect Traps" -
It's the hardest rod/wand to id because it needs to either be sold or pointed at a trap to ID. For consistency's sake, it would be awesome if you id'd one, you'd recognize the other.

In ASCII mode detect traps makes white ******* when it beams so you can tell it's not something else. Also, if you aim it at a monster and nothing happens and it doesn't id as light or darkness than it's gotta be traps (unless you're aiming a wand of drain life at a golem, but like I said, I think the graphic for traps is different.) That all said I would also love to see this grouping and I had asked for it a couple years ago.
