P_class starting equipment change?

I've been playing Angband for a few weeks now. I seem to die pretty quick, but I have fun.

However, I was hoping to find out how to start characters with various extra items and artifacts... I'm looking to play characters with the names of various items, and want to start them with the item in question, such as starting a character named Tulkas with the Ring of Tulkas.

Any tips would be appreciated!

Well, you need to edit .txt files in the /edit folder.

Some points to note:

1. You can only start with objects in the object.txt file.

2. The artifacts in the object.txt file are those with the INSTA_ART flag. You can't start with any ego items or other artifacts (incl. random artifacts).

# The Massive Iron Crown of Morgoth
# The Mighty Hammer 'Grond'
# The Phial of Galadriel -- see artifact list
# The Star of Elendil -- see artifact list
# The Arkenstone of Thrain -- see artifact list
# The Amulet of Carlammas -- see artifact list
# The Amulet of Ingwe -- see artifact list
# The Necklace of the Dwarves -- see artifact list
# The Ring of Barahir -- see artifact list
# The Ring of Tulkas -- see artifact list
# The Ring of Power 'Narya' -- see artifact list
# The Ring of Power 'Nenya' -- see artifact list
# The Ring of Power 'Vilya' -- see artifact list
# The Ring of Power 'The One Ring' -- see artifact list
# The Palantir of Westernesse -- see artifact list
# The Elfstone 'Elessar' -- see artifact list
# The Jewel 'Evenstar' -- see artifact list

3. You can only start with a certain number of starting items (five).

If you stick to those limits then the process is pretty straight forward - just looking at the existing text files should tell you all you need to know.

If you want to break any of those points then you will need to edit the source files and re-compile Angband.

One way to do this is to use the debug commands:
  1. Look up the artifact's serial number from its "N" line in lib/edit/artifact.txt
  2. Press INSERT, and at the "Count:" prompt, type in the serial number
  3. Press CTRL-A, and say yes to the warning if it pops up
  4. At the "Debug Command:" prompt, type a capital C
  5. Pick up the artifact from the floor.

If you want to identify it, you can use the debug ID: CTRL-A, i

Wizard mode and debug commands may flag your savefile as a cheater, so keep that in mind.

Was that debug command ("C" to create an artifact) recently added? Because I've never seen it in a list of debug commands, and it would've made it much easier to test certain things in DaJAngband.

I think it's always been there. There's an even nicer version in O/FA, ehich prompts you for the artifact like "c" does for other objects.
