Stupid Idea - Color Pits

I think it would be kind of awesome if there were pits of monsters that all had the same color. Like a "light blue" pit, "slate" pit, etc.

Don't you think that would be kind of awesome?

O/FA/probably S have this to an extent - for example, you can get pits of v's and E's which are all red, and similar for p/h pits (eg all blue = thieves) and D/d pits.

What colour do you think would be scariest? My guess is violet.

Z also has it (maybe not in 2.7.x), but I think that is more interesting discovering pit with various monsters of the same kind (evil ones with 'goods' are fight each other).

Unfortunately, having just tried to implement this in Unangband, it turns out to be 'not vaguely awesome'. You get too many random monsters thrown together...

However, matching on either the first word, last word or all but the first word in the monster name does turn out to be kind of awesome.

Not vaguely awesome? Impossible!
I'll take your word for it since you've tested it yourself.

The matching words sounds really neat. I've been running some examples in my head. Are you producing "structured" pits (like orc/troll/giant/dragon/demon) or "unstructured" ones (like graveyard/zoo/jellies).

Also, save me from the Quylthulg pits.

How about first word of "Great" or "Greater" ...

I'm actually producing 'ecologies' which is something specific to Unangband, which doesn't have pits. Instead, the dungeon level gets divided up into one or more ecologies, and monsters get placed from a list generated in the ecology.

I'm about to special-case anything that has the word 'of' or 'wyrm' in it. So it'll instead try to match on 'Hell' or 'Plague' or 'Swamp' or so on.
