They're both useful, but for my money Banish Evil is probably a better spell for the final fight, at least if there are still uniques left alive. Practically everything Morgoth can summon is evil (in fact I think the only exceptions are all non-evil uniques like Huan), which means Banish Evil will always work on them. Mass Banish has the benefit of working on monsters that aren't in LOS -- but then again, monsters that aren't in LOS aren't generally that urgent to deal with.

Yeah, nothing matches lategame mage utility. I just still wish they had the good item detection spell. I've considered tinkering with my edit files to give them Detect Treasure (rather than Detect Objects) but at the lvl/fail/manacost of D.Objects. I just have much more fun with the Rogue class style of item-sniping.
