YAVP - Finally won a dwarf paladin

Dump link

Dwarf paladin is a character that I really wanted to win with, since it was the first character that I tried (after getting some sense of how to play a roguelike, at least ). Unfortunately, I had some troubles with it, with quite some flavors of death:
  • Not taking Arien seriously enough
  • Running into a trapper in a game where free action refused to spawn
  • Kavlax breathes chaos, staff of teleport fails, Kavlax breathes gravity, Kavlax breathes fire, you died.
  • Running into a mercenary townsman by accident before entering the dungeon
  • A desperate fight with a naga pit had me in dire straits, so I tried to blindly quaff a potion in hopes of getting some more health...yet sadly, it was salt water, and I fainted from hunger and starved
  • Spectator paralyzed me in another game where free action refused to spawn
After all of that, though, I finally got one to the finish, and it was probably my smoothest winner to date. I only ran away from a couple of levels that were swarming with time/plasma hounds, and aside from Omarax, Osse, and Ancalagon, I think killed every unique the first time that I came across them (incidentally, this was also my first character to kill every unique ). It lacked the supreme battlefield control of a well-kitted mage, but it just did a great job of being able to survive just about anything and everything that got spawned (although I did exercise some discretion in not trying out a "hellpit" vault down around dl95).

Highlights:
Code:
the Quarterstaff of Gostelin (5d9) (+13,+14) <+2>
Conjured forth by magic at 3700 feet (level 74)

     +2 attack speed.
     Branded with cold.
     Provides resistance to nether.
Cannot be harmed by acid, fire.
     Feather Falling.

     Combat info:
     7.0 blows/round.
Average damage/round: 824.6 vs. creatures not resistant to cold, and 429.1 vs. others.
This is probably the best thing that an ?acquirement has made for me to date. It was doing over 900 damage/round vs. creatures not resistant to cold when I had on my ring of damage! 2-turn kills on lesser titans and lesser balrogs was a thing that happened! Simply incredible.
Code:
the Mace of Disruption of Amromaed (5d8) (+9,+14) {!k}
Dropped by Harowen the Black Hand at 3800 feet (level 76)

     Slays undead.
     Branded with acid.
     Provides resistance to dark, nexus.
Cannot be harmed by acid, fire.

     Combat info:
     5.0 blows/round.
Average damage/round: 584.5 vs. creatures not resistant to acid, 584.5 vs. undead, and 310 vs. others.
Honestly, I didn't use this much, but I DID remember to bring it to bear against Sauron. He died so fast that there wasn't even any summoning or teleporting in that fight
Code:
the Long Bow of Nathalath (x3) (+9,+14) <+11>
Dropped by Tselakus, the Dreadlord at 3750 feet (level 75)

     +11 speed.
Cannot be harmed by acid, fire.
     Prevents paralysis.
I used this from dl75 to dl99. Crap damage compared to my alternatives, but paladin archery sucks anyway, so it basically freed up a ring slot for me to use a ring of damage for another ~80-100 dam/round on average.
Code:
the Set of Gauntlets of Morerdil [3,+13] <+5>
Dropped by Medusa, the Gorgon at 2550 feet (level 51)

     +5 strength.
     +5 dexterity.
     +5 tunneling.
     Provides resistance to lightning.
Cannot be harmed by acid, fire.
     Prevents paralysis.
Really solid gloves. The +5 str/dex did wonders to help me get max blows with pretty much any weapon that I wanted to use, and +5 tunneling on top of being a dwarf made digging a breeze.
Code:
a Mace of Disruption of Extra Attacks (5d8) (+15,+18) <+2> {!k}
Found lying on the floor in a vault at 4150 feet (level 83)

     +2 attack speed.
     Slays undead.

     Combat info:
     7.0 blows/round.
Average damage/round: 870.8 vs. undead, and 477.4 vs. others.
Not a shiny randart, but a damn solid weapon. The damage would've been higher, except I wanted to use my haradrim xbow against Morgoth, so I had to drop my usual ring of damage for a ring of speed.
Code:
the Mithril Plate Mail of Durin (-3) [60,+14] <+2>
Found lying on the floor in a vault at 4550 feet (level 91)

     +2 strength.
     +2 wisdom.
     +2 constitution.
Provides resistance to acid, lightning, fire, frost, poison gas, light, dark.
     Provides protection from fear, blindness.
     Cannot be harmed by acid.
Slows your metabolism. Sustains your life force. Aggravates
     creatures nearby.

When activated, it does bizarre things.
Takes 590 to 864 turns to recharge at your current speed.
Your chance of success is 93.5%
Honestly, this didn't give me much over just sticking with the MHDSM that I had (or even the elvenkind armor that I was using before that), but wisdom was my only stat that wasn't sustained, so the +2 helped a bit to handle Morgoth's stat draining. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but I *think* that activation is the same as the One Ring. If it is, that's a surprise to see that it can spawn on other equipment when playing with randarts. Sauron must be jealous
Code:
the Metal Cap of Galin (+6,+1) [3,+12] <+5>
Dropped by Cantoras, the Skeletal Lord at 4600 feet (level 92)

     +5 wisdom.
     +5 dexterity.
     +5 infravision.
Provides resistance to lightning, fire, frost.
     Provides protection from blindness.
     Cannot be harmed by acid.
     Prevents paralysis.

When activated, it grants fire resistance for d20+20 turns and
creates a fire ball of damage 80.
Takes 324 to 396 turns to recharge at your current speed.
Your chance of success is 95.6%
I think this was worth losing the wisdom sustain from a crown of lordliness
Code:
49735 1650' Found the Iron Crown 'Mahtalon' (LOST)
50216 1650' Killed Lokkak, the Ogre Chieftain
50970 1650' Killed Rogrog the Black Troll
50975 1650' Found the Leather Shield 'Iangionas' (LOST)
Rogrog was very generous for me this game. I entered this floor without any +speed, and Rogrog dropped a ring of speed +7 and that randart shield of +3 con/+3 speed.
Code:
124476 3750' Killed Uvatha the Horseman
124508 3750' Killed Tselakus, the Dreadlord
124539 3750' Found the Long Bow of Nathalath
124893 3750' Killed Dwar, Dog Lord of Waw
124899 3750' Found the Ring of Haramir
125042 3750' Killed Thuringwethil, the Vampire Messenger
    125042 3750' Reached level 45
Whole lot of undead killing . Uvatha and Dwar were summoned by Tselakus. They probably didn't appreciate it. Also, Thuringwethil was the first thing since Rogrog to drop a ring of speed. Granted, Rogrog's drop was rather out of depth, but that's still 42 floors between them
Code:
141407 4150' Killed Draugluin, Sire of All Werewolves
    141407 4150' Reached level 48
141536 4150' Found the Katana of Aglade (LOST)
142275 4150' Killed Kronos, Lord of the Titans
142298 4150' Found the Cutlass of Singor (LOST)
143072 4150' Killed Atlas, the Titan
Not listed: a pit fiend earlier in the level decided to summon Ancalagon as well. I ended up destructing him away. Also not listed, the fact that fighting Kronos and Atlas without pConf was actually not THAT bad with at least +20 speed.
Code:
143979 4200' Found the Broad Sword of Lomin (LOST)
144333 4200' Killed Pazuzu, Lord of Air
145194 4200' Found the Glaive 'Carth' (LOST)
145850 4200' Found the Zweihander 'Agniphron' (LOST)
146399 4200' Killed Huan, Wolfhound of the Valar
    146399 4200' Reached level 49
146411 4200' Found the Morning Star of Namros (LOST)
146413 4200' Found the Serpent Ring 'Beriqueth' (LOST)
146764 4200' Killed Carcharoth, the Jaws of Thirst
146767 4200' Found the Long Bow of Menos
147999 4200' Killed Omarax, the Eye Tyrant
148302 4200' Found the Phial of Lothlot (LOST)
Whole lot of fun on this level . Huan, Carcharoth, and Omarax were all inside a "bubbles" vault (Pazuzu was just along the way). I ran into Carcharoth first and teleported him away. As I went deeper, I got a zweihander randart with frost immunity, light resistance, and decent damage (about 250/round vs. other), so I used that to kill Huan. Appropriately enough, Huan dropped me a randart morning star with fire immunity and acid branding on it, so I used THAT to kill Carcharoth. Not quite the way things went for the dogs in "Of Beren and Luthien", but probably about as close as it can get in a game of Angband.
Code:
151120 4300' Killed Lungorthin, the Balrog of White Fire
151325 4300' Killed Maeglin, the Traitor of Gondolin
    151325 4300' Reached level 50
151328 4300' Found the Steel Helm 'Glielumor' (LOST)
152284 4300' Found the Morning Star of Rahar (LOST)
152524 4300' Killed Gothmog, the High Captain of Balrogs
152526 4300' Found the Set of Gauntlets 'Ilimrand' (LOST)
152629 4300' Found the Wicker Shield of Arwendor (LOST)
153664 4300' Killed Ancalagon the Black
153666 4300' Found the Beaked Axe 'Telar' (LOST)
153669 4300' Found the Tulwar of Sulon (LOST)
Really, this was only particularly noteworthy for being where Ancalagon finally met his end, after getting summoned far too many times earlier (case in point, he was summoned by Maeglin this time).
Code:
165948 4800' Killed Qlzqqlzuup, the Emperor Quylthulg
All uniques slain!

The character dump message log missed it, but the final round of the fight with Morgoth was a hit, a superb hit, and a *GREAT* hit. It seemed fitting, escalating like that. Look, sometimes I'm easily amused, alright?

Anyway, with that accomplished, I think it might be time to take another crack at hobbit ranger. This character was great fun and all, but they can't all be completely stealthless brutes, right?

Sweet! I've been having a lot of fun with dwarf paladins lately myself -- it's a great combination, not hard to get started with but can still compete at the deeper levels as well.
