noob question about targeting

Geez this is as simple as anything, but I'm confused. Apologies for the newbie question...
So far I target the nearest enemy with " ' " with no problem strategically. But now I'm in a situation where I need to target the center enemy in a group.

Code:

Direction ('*' or <click> to target " ' " for closest, Escape to cancel)?

Pressing * allows me to move among targets, but its as if it turns into "looking". The command seems to end there, nothing to do but press escape or enter another command. And I'm unsure of what is meant by "<click>". Just what am I doing wrong?

Off the cuff, if you can make it highlight the monster you want to attack, try hitting 't'. Apologies for an unsure answer, but that's my best guess without having to load up V and try myself.

That was it! Thanks much. I recall reading "t" in the command descriptions, but wasnt clear at the moment how it applied.

<click> means that you can use the mouse to target.

When in targeting mode, you can also hit 'o' to switch to free-targeting without resetting the current cursor position.
