stat potion question from a noob

I just recently started getting sucked into angband, so I'm still learning the ropes so to speak. I've been seeing a lot of character logs from seasoned players, and am surprised to see that pretty much all of their stats are maxed.

I tend to get myself killed somewhere between 1500 - 2000 feet, usually because i do something stupid. Around that depth I am finding a fair amount of stat swap potions (brawn, nimbleness, contemplating, etc), but it seems impossible to get all the stats so high while constantly substituting one stat for another. Are there potions that give straight stats that I am simply not getting deep enough to find? If so, what depth will I start finding them, and can anybody offer any tips on what level/gear I should have before I venture there?

Thanks, and I appreciate any help.

Stat potions are common from around level 35 to 40, and yes they will raise a stat point. Gain 1/loose 1 stat potions are usueful if your primarily concerned about raising a particular stat, like con-which is important to get very high to survive deeper down. I usualy will play a half-troll warrior and drink potions of brawn to raise strength and potions to raise con. those 2 are my primary concernes, a good dex helps to. but I only frink what I need, if you luck up and loose charisma, that would be the stat to loose for gain 1/loose 1 stat potions, charisma is almost worthlwess. but I don't drink many of them instead I get to stat gain levels as fast as possible level 35.

You should worry about FA-free action, by level 20 and potions of CCW to negate confusion. Some sort of See Invisible is also very useful. potions of heroism, or an item like ring of the dog for fear resistance is also helpful, finally be looking for resistance for the basic 4, Fire,Elec,Acid,Cold as those are the big damage dealers for 1st half or so of dungeon, Poison resistance can save your life. And one of the most important things-Speed, try to get to 20+speed by endgame. Stealth is also very useful for not waking up the dungeon.

Their are other players who can probably give you more info, Like Timo, Magnate, Derakon, Fizzix, and others who have a huge amount of knowledge about the game.

Thanks for the info! Just got myself to dlvl 32 ... deepest i've gotten to be honest lol. I have managed to get FA, fire, cold, acid, lightning, and poison resist so far. Would love to find something that resists confusion, but not so lucky yet. With any luck I can make it a few more levels without dying and get my stats pumped up.

Confusion resistance is rare, especially if you're playing with randarts on. Carry potions of Cure Critical Wounds; they'll cancel any confusion effects, though you can of course get confused again. Carry a Staff of Teleportation, too -- it can be used when you're confused (though with a higher failure rate than usual), which can be very important if you get cornered by an Umber Hulk or a Nightmare.

Umber Hulk you can usually fight even when confused if you are reasonably high level (if you can survive at 1500' without problems you are good enough to fight Umber Hulk), Nightmares and especially Titans are completely different matter. Do not fight a titan without confusion protection.

Yeah, the main reason why Umber Hulks could be trouble is if you're fighting them while other monsters are in the vicinity. A lone Hulk is generally not a threat; it just takes a long time to kill and chews the terrain to pieces.

Yeah Umber Hulks don't typically cause me much of a problem. I'm playing a priest at the moment, so generally 1 or 2 orbs is enough to kill them.

So I've been farming up a bit of stats, and it looks like my con is capping out at 18/140, where I see some other player dumps getting much higher. Is that because my starting con when I made this character was lower, or because they have equipment that pushes it further?

Well, now, what do you think? Look at their gear and you'll see plenty of CON bonuses. 18/200 CON isn't achievable without at least some bonuses to CON -- even a half-troll warrior caps out at 18/150 otherwise. In fact your 18/140 almost certainly has some CON bonus on there as well -- the only priest combination that achieves that naturally is, again, the half-troll.

Ah ha! Thanks lol, you got me I hadn't inspected all of their equipment which I probably should have done before posting the question.

Are the caps for each stat about the same, or does it vary depending on the stat/class?
