It's already the case for 3.4 (Shockbolt tiles are the default).

I think having tiles on by default would definitely make the game more attractive to new players, as well as reduce the flood of "dood how do i turn on teh tilez" posts... well, OK, there's no such flood!
![]() And seriously, isn't being accessible to newbies a far better goal than avoiding making veterans change one lousy option when installing the game? ![]()

False dichotomy. The proper way to handle this and other similar problems is to guide the user through setting up the interface the first time they run the game. Let the user make an informed decision instead of making it for them and then forcing them to seek out the appropriate menu option(s) to change it back if they don't like your default.

I always use tiles ...
... but would love to see Vanilla or a variant to not throw at least one error in the list of tiles in the menu ;-)

I need a large map display so that I don't get surprised by offscreen breath. ASCII takes the least screen space per tile, so it allows the largest map display.
Unless game mechanics change so that the range from which monsters can take action is a lot smaller, the need for ASCII won't change. |
