Google+ kinda lets you do that, too, if I'm not mistaken...

Yes, it's surely something like that. But sharing an invitation url should work even between people who already have a Potluck account. That it doesn't work is hopefully a bug.

I'm trying to resist Google's world domination.

For example, I'm a Linux enthusiast, but I'd rather use a Windows Phone than an Android. Android's business plan is to collect as much information as possible about the user for advertising purposes. Android is NSA's best friend. It's getting scary.

EDIT: this Firefox and Chrome extension helps a bit against Google's (and others') spying: https://disconnect.me/

I don't deny that Google collects an awful lot of information about its users, but at the same time I don't think they're collecting any more than any other company does. They're notable for how pervasive they are, not for how invasive they're being.

Yeah, everybody does it. But in Google's case, collecting information & advertising is the core of their business model. They don't get money out of sold phones (unlike Apple).

Google is able to collect information from many more sources than any other company. Pervasiveness + invasiveness is a scary combination.

I'm already using Google's email and search. I want someone else to collect my location data.

The NSA spying scandals have gotten on my nerves. Anything related to information gathering gets me a bit angry. Usually I like Google a bit more.

OK, now I have some friends in Potluck! Cool.

If you have signed in, click on the articles that I've commented on or 'hearted', and you might notice a couple of familiar faces from oook sharing links. I've no idea whether you can 'friend' them or not, given that adding friends is so complicated in Potluck.

Hey, now that I'm getting some experience with a bleeding edge social platform, I might eventually write a little article about it for a Finnish computer magazine.

Potluck might be a perfect introduction to social media for some older folks I'm teaching. It's not as scary as Facebook.

Ha! Now I got it.

To 'friend' someone whose username you know, write a comment to an article: @Mikko

After you have published the comment, you may click on @Mikko and then Add him. He'll have to confirm.

I just realized what Potluck is.

It's Reddit where you can only see stuff that people you know post...
