I don't know if it counts for ranged, you can check that yourself though. Statgain is everywhere from dlvl 40 on. Advice about statgain is good, but I suggest going as deep as you can survive.

With the damage ring I do 31.1 damage and have 276 HP so it's actually only 20HP. Does the damage ring only count for melee? Or ranged too?
1. I'd be inclined to keep wearing the damage ring. Keep the CON +3 ring in your home and check the HP it adds later as you gain levels and CON from other sources.

2. The last time I checked, damage rings only add to melee. You can easily verify this by 'I'nspecting your ammo both with and without the ring on.

The problem with going as deep as you can survive is that you frequently don't find out how deep that is until it's too late.

Well? And then you die. But you'll die anyway even if you try to play conservatively, since what you really need to have to survive is information about what enemies can do. Without that, you can't possibly hope to survive even if you're kitted out the wazoo. Dive fast, die early, know better for next time.

Hey, since I downloaded 3.3.2, I've played conservatively. My first char made it to character level 35 and the next was a winner. 3 of the next 4 were also winners (with an early oops on L1 of the dungeon).

Of course, you could argue that I already had the requisite knowledge from playing previous versions of Angband ...

I've also played before but a long time ago, I remember always dying when something breathed gas at me at around level 40, a multi hued dragon, or there was another monster that also does it.

Anyway, I've just found bar chain mail of resistance, it grants all 4 basic resistances but it's too heavy for me. Is it worth keeping until I boost my strength or shall I just sell it?

If that is your only bodyarmor with all four resists in one, keep it.

RIP George the Dunadan Ranger killed on Dlevel 36 by a pack of gravity hounds

Oh well, thanks for the help. Gonna go for a ranger again though I liked it.

I've gone for a gnome ranger.

It's a bit frustrating going from smiting dragons and trolls with my old character to running away from a fight with a crow with my new one but hey ho, that's life.

You've chosen an exceptionally fragile character, just so you know. Generally with gnomes I'd advise either going with a full mage (where fragility is less of a concern because you rarely get into melee), or picking one of the heavier-duty classes. Paladins and rogues are both much better at fighting than rangers are (albeit not as good with ranged weapons).

In any event, good luck!
