A nice kickstart...
Brienne the half-elf rogue headed down to level 1 with a spring in her step and a song in her heart. The first creature she encountered was a yellow centipede, which she easily dispatched.
Her second foe? Farmer Maggot's dog, Fang. With a bit of careful maneuvering she managed to kill him -- and immediately made level 4! It was a nice start, but alas, she was killed on level 6 by a swarm of orcs. So much for good omens... (Also, hi, I'm new here, but I've been sucking at Angband for more than 10 years. I've never made it past level 20. Fortunately, I'm not really a goal-oriented person, I just like killing stuff and finding treasure.) |

As for killing Fang, I started out with max strength and had multiple blows with my dagger; a little caution was all it took. |

It doesn't work that way. At cl 1, dl 2 monsters give 2x experience. At cl 3, they give only 2/3x experience. That's part of the reason people like diving. The other part is that monster experience goes up exponentially. If you want to continue to rocket up in levels, kill a Dark Elf (dl 7) at cl 3. That will put you up another level or two. (Try playing Quickband; diving is a lot easier there, since each level counts for 3 NPP/Vanilla levels.)

Just had a half-elf priest do the same last week. Entered the dungeon, killed a white icky thing. Turned the corner and found myself wiping Fang's mushroom-smelling slobber off the front of my leather armour. 2 CSWs and some very good luck later, I was 4th level. Then, nothing interesting happened for a very long time.
Died last night from the stereotypical Angand death: slowed by inertia hounds, and pummeled by a storm giant, I teleported out to the greeting of "The AMHD (offscreen) breathes acid..." Why is it that fatal AMHDs are always off-screen? I was 35th level at about 2400' and still had not found *any* of the following resistances: poison, light, confusion, blindness, sound, nexus, nether, chaos, and disenchant. And I was covering the basics with a combination of Thalkettoth, shield of res Fire, amulet of res lightning, and ring of res cold. It was a lousy game for resistance. Of course, I died to from something I could already resist... |
