Damage Reduction Armor

I recently found the Metal Chain Mail Belegennon which has +5 damage reduction which I haven't seen before. Does this simply mean that if someone hits you, breathes on you, etc. and it would normally drop you by 100 hit points it only drops you by 95 or is it something different?
