I've killed M with a ranger using only non-ego seeker ammo.

If you melee, or shoot and let him hit you, you don't need as much healing as you think. CLW is massively overpowered. ?phase and CLW repeatedly. You might need to ?phase twice to get your hp back up over 700. Or if down a lot say from mana storm CLW 4 time before using !heal. That sort of thing should significantly extend your healing potions. I'm not the only person to kill M with a mage using no potions of any type of healing at all.

The most important thing is to take a huge stack of ?phase. I suggest 99 if you can keep your speed high enough.

The best reason to keep searching for stuff is if there are any nasty uniques you have not killed yet.

Yeah the "blink, slam CLW, melee" technique after using up all of your Slay Evil or seeker ammo works pretty well if you're patient. My kobold ranger did it with crappy randarts and an ego long bow.

It's not a glamorous fight, but it's effective. Sometimes you may get only 1 or 2 rounds of arrows off on him before he's in melee range, but that's ok. The key is to minimize the teleporting so that he doesn't regen a lot of hp while running over to you (blinking is the way to go unless he absolutely fills up the area and you have no other choice).

Thanks for the tips. Downing P with non-ego ammo ? Im amazed that you can carry enough of them for that. Impressive

Basically thats what I did, went to kill some more of the nasty uniques and found a better weapon, finally. I did the jump-and-clw game, but often nasty summons rather made me do the teleport-and-heal. The main problem was mana, I have been keeping up buffs and glyph of warding. I can see how not doing that might be better.

After P was down, I got myself killed to get a peek into the artifact spoiler (could there be an option to do that not only after death, but also after winning ?). Some of the highlights which I never found:

The Katana 'Ivrion' (5d5) (+21,+19) [+2]
----------------------------------------
+11 constitution, speed.
+55% to searching.
Slays undead.
*Slays* dragons, demons.
Branded with acid, lightning, flames, frost, venom.
Provides resistance to acid, fear, light, dark, sound, nexus.

Grants the ability to see invisible things.

The Heavy Crossbow of Elcharin (x7) (+9,+12)

When activated, it makes you very hungry but restores constitution and str

When activated, it heals cut damage, and cures stunning, poison and blindn
ess.
Takes 56 to 98 turns to recharge.


So the ranger items were there, I just never saw them

Having never won, I didn't realise that anything different happened. I thought you had to suicide to finish the game after winning, and that took you to the death menu ... if that's not what happens, what's different?

+11 con!? That's crazy! Anybody care to enlighten me as to how the pval gets generated for stat boosts, and what the odds are for ending up with +11? I'm unfortunately not skilled enough in code h4xx0ring to look it up myself.

+11 CON is insane. +11 attack speed would be the best weapon ever.

Thats right. However, retiring does the trick - you get the same option after you do so.

Note, tho, that +11 Con *looks* impressive, but a lot of it will probably be wasted. The killer aspects on that katana are the speed boost, the extra damage dice, and the total combination of slays/brands...VERY few critters will NOT take significant extra damage.
