Tried out a Staff of Dispel Evil. Didn't notice, that someone stroke back.

It would have been completely avoidable. If I only had teleported or healed. ^^

As I said: Plain stupid.

It's an entirely misleading title. Maybe a disclaimer* is in order.

Heh. Reminds me of the Bar Door spell (in Sangband only perhaps?) and door barring in general:

Do not expect this action to be worth the turns, let alone the mana, invested in it when it is used against monsters that can unlock doors, break down doors, or even just look disapprovingly at doors, or, more generally, anything worth the effort of trying to restrain behind a door in the first place.

Which is why my first item squelch in almost every game is spikes. I have never found them even the slightest bit useful. They aren't even worth lugging up to sell.

You can throw them for a tiny bit of damage. I've used spikes to kill floating eyes or to finish of fleeing foes, saving my oil and ammo for later.

Just got killed by a nether wraith... on dungeon level five. Wasn't quite instant, but it was pretty dang fast. Got exp-drained out of nowhere, detected invisible expecting an OOD banshee that I could try to run from - death.

Guess that explains the 'superb' feeling...
