To recap, I have character level 10 and am on dungeon level 7. I Detect Evil and see a skeleton kobold, a green glutton ghost, a cave orc, and Smeagol. I'll explore the rest of the dungeon before deciding if I should take on Smeagol or not.

I find some arrows and, later, a long bow. The arrows have frost brands, so I quickly switch to my long bow even though it has no enchantments.

I identify a potion of Berserk Strength, which gets squelched for some reason.

At some point I notice I gained level 11. I don't remember how.

I find a gang of novice priests and novice rogues. Looking back, p's have being coming in larger groups than I remember in previous Angband versions (or maybe I just never got this deep).

I decide to take on Smeagol. Reckless? Maybe. But while he can take my gold, I don't think he can kill me.

I lost the screenshot of where I first meet Smeagol. Basically, there is a room with a hallway loop around it and a door on its south side. I'm in the hallway to the right of the door. Smeagol just exited the door, and there is a cave orc east of me. I Bless myself, smite the orc, then fire a couple of magic missiles at Smeagol. The demented hobbit merely shrugs them off. By the time he closes in on me, I decide to drink my potion of Berserk Strength (the one that got squelched).

To my dismay, Smeagol pick-pocketed me and ran off.

I Bless myself when I get in range of Smeagol again. I try firing one of my frost arrows, but miss, so I try hitting Smeagol a few times.

The damn bastard steals more gold from me and teleports. I don't remember him being so freaking tough! I Bless myself when we meet again. I try battling Smeagol some more, and again he steals gold from me and teleports! He's even outside my Detect Evil range now! Truly Smeagol is a curse that must be wiped from the earth. Somehow, I meet Smeagol again once more. I stab him a little, only for him to take more of my coins. This time when I try Detecting Evil, I'm told that I detect evil but nothing shows up on the map!

I only find Smeagol again by accident.

And what do I gain? 26 gold and my old frost arrow. Compare to the fact that Smeagol took a total of 261 gold from me. I'm dissapointed that Angband doesn't have monster corpses like Hengband does where I can collect the corpses of uniques I've killed and put them in my home or give them to the museum.

when you start getting gold (basically pick up things that will make you money in the dungeon-- ego weapons, wands/staves (you'll figure out which ones are worthwhile pretty fast)-- you should start getting your longbow and weapon enchanted with +dam as fast as you can. longbow does x3 whatever your +dam is. So, with unenchanted arrows:

longbow (0,0)= 3*((1+4)/2+0)=7.5 damage
(0,1)=10.5 dam
(0,2)=13.5 (doubled your firepower for about 260 gold)
(0,3)=16.5
. . .

you should be able to get most things up to +9/+9-- more powerfully enchanted weapons exist in the black market or the dungeon.

The deeper you go, the more nice equipment will show up in both the stores and on the floor (I think you'll start seeing more egos around dlvl 20). Don't be afraid to bully weaker monsters that drop things (hello, snagas)-- it's a good way to get loot.

Sell the rod of slow monster, and don't bother picking up eq that is merely good unless it's better than what you have on-- it's not worth enough money to justify filling your slots. Also, hold onto your arrows of frost until you come across something big and scary that you can't escape-- when you get your bow more enchanted, they will do serious damage (x3 frost multiplier stacks with longbow x3 multiplier). Phase door and arrows are good for killing big uniques.

Have you squelched it before and confirmed it to be squelched in the future?

You can undo this option by entering the squelch menu:
press =
press s
press e
scroll down with the arrow key to the potion of berserk strength - it is probably marked with a red asterisk. Just press enter to remove the asterisk.
Press ESC until you are back to Angband.

It's not worth to hunt Smeagol. Leave the level if you can't beat him and kill him later.

For equipment, is this taking into account the costs of identifying everything? For example, is it worth carrying around a weapon for one dungeon level until I've pseudo-identified it, then deciding what to do with it? If I have a weapon that's pseudo-identified as {magical} or {excellent}, how much would shop keepers charge for those compared to fully identified items?

Well, I did kill him, though it was costlier than I was expecting.

Can someone please explain to me how exactly I'm supposed to tell just how tough a monster is when I see it? Do I have to basically sacrifice a hundred characters until I know exactly what character level and equipment I need for every monster and unique?

So, I need to dive faster?
That's the easiest way to get useful loot.

Most monsters can't kill you in a single turn (or even two), and those that can are usually scary in some obvious way.
The trick is to recognize early when a fight is not going your way and then run (or teleport other) immediately.

I descend a set of stairs to dungeon level 8. There is a metallic green centipede and a group of seven sleeping novice mages (no beds?). I dispatch the centipede, but it takes longer than I expected, and the mages wake up. I start firing my wand of Stinking Cloud, then start finishing them off with my wand of Magic Missiles. One mage has escaped out of the room. Due to laziness of targeting, I also wake up a creeping silver coins with my wand. There is one mage left in the room, and he blinds me for a few turns. Eventually, I finish off the remaining enemies in the room. As I pick up the treasure that is here, the mage that escaped returns. I zap him with a magic missile, dispatching him forever. One of the items of loot is a Rod of Treasure Location. Yay.

I encounter a horde of lemures in a hallway. As I fight them, a dark elven warrior also sneaks up on me. I make the dark elf run away, but the lemures are a greater hassle. I phase door a couple of times. Soon, some cave spiders enter the fray. I finish off the lemures, and the dark elf returns. I manage to kill the dark elf, then I enter the room with the spiders and shoot stinking clouds at them. In the room where the spiders were, I find an amulet that is of Slow Digestion when I identify it.

I find my first chest, this one being small and wooden. I move it to a more open spot and search it for traps. I find a trap, and I successfully disarm it. Opening it reveals a cache of coins.

I find a group of manes in another hallway. Killing one gets me character level 12.

At some point, I detect Wormtongue. I'll probably put off seeing him. After some more exploration, I take the next stairs down to dungeon level 9.

During my initial exploration, I detect Wormtongue again! It's still probably a good idea to avoid him.

At some point I run into a gang of hill orcs. I gain character level 13 through this.

I meet a gang of novice warriors in a hallway. At some point I want to get away, so I read Phase Door. This only puts me in the middle of the warriors. I read a Word of Recall, then I read another Phase Door, then I run away.

I'm yanked back to town. I sell off my excess stuff. I am finally able to buy my next two prayer books from the temple, and learn all those prayers I've been missing. I pick up a studded leather armour of resist lightning from the black market. Damn that was expensive. I buy more food, arrows, scrolls of Phase Door, scrolls of Words of Recall, and scrolls of Identify. I have to replace my metal cap since it got damaged by acid. Satisfied, I read a Word of Recall.

That money you wasted on the armor would have been much better used on a staff of teleportation. (Seems like one of us should've mentioned that in our earlier tips. sorry to be telling you too late..) Single-resist armor is not worth buying from the BM, but you're going to need a staff of teleportation.

yeah, you'll need to pseudo id until you get enough cash to carry a stack of ?id or _perception. When something comes up as magic, if you have an ego on the same slot, kill it (but not for missiles-- magic arrows are worthwhile). In general, you should always ID items before selling them to shopkeepers-- they will not give you much more money (if any) based on pseudo ID. An excellent weapon will normally fetch around 5000 gold (more for the really nice ones). In fact, you may start hoarding them in your home as a sort of rainy-day fund (for when that armor of elvenkind shows up in the armory).

While exploring, I find a better cloak for me to wear.

I try disarming a dart trap. I trigger it, taking a hit to dexterity.

After killing some snagas and a lost soul, I gain character level 14. I can gain one prayer, but my level is too low for the remaining prayers in my books. Again.

I find another small wooden chest with some coins in it.

Bored, I descend to dungeon level 10.

I'm in a dark room. I first Detect Evil and sense a horde of orcs and no less than 3 baby dragons. When I get deeper in the level, I also detect Mughash the Kobold Lord and his army.

A one point I meet a gang of rangers. Things don't look dangerous until things started blinding, confusing, and poisoning me. Turns out a dark elven mage is also here. I read a scroll of Phase Door as soon as I can see and run. My run is cut short when the dark elf confuses me. I have to chug down potions of Cure Serious Wounds. I read a Word of Recall and another Phase Door. I'm able to get rid of the poison, but the dark elf keeps catching up to me. I'm down to 25 hit points. I wait, chugging down all of my healing potions. I'm down to one last potion of cure light wounds, and I'm finally in the town. I drink that last potion to get rid of my remaining poison.

Just my luck: no one is stocking potions of Restore Dexterity. Shouldn't the temple offer stock healing services? Anyway, I buy more Phase Doors, Words of Recall, and Identification scrolls. I use up the rest of my gold on potions of Cure Critical Wounds.

I Word of Recall back to the dungeon. During exploration, I face a bronze baby dragon. His confusion breath is not fun, and I used up most of my healing potions just to get rid of the confusion.

I battle another dark elf mage. With their poison and blindness, those guys are tough! I defeat him though, and am rewarded by a lantern of brightness.

I battle a gang of cave orcs and novice rangers. My reward is a ring of resist cold, a staff of Haste Monsters (ahem), and an amulet of adornment (ahem).

Fighting another dark elven mage gets me character level 15.

I fight a group of novice paladins keeping a herd of jackals, then another group of novice paladins teamed up with novice priests. I descend to dungeon level 11.

I am caught off-guard by Brodda the Easterling.

On a related note, a shovel I had picked up turned out to be magical. I replace my old shovel.

I try disarming a trap. It was a trap door, and I fall to level 12.

After several battles, a swordsman brings me to level 16.

While going down a long hallway, something casts poison and confuse on me. I drink a potion of Cure Critical Wounds to get rid of the confusion, then Phase Door out of the hallway. I Detect Evil and, sure enough, it's a dark elven mage. I decide to just go back to the town.

The alchemy shop finally has a potion of Restore Dexterity. I replace my metal cap with a better metal cap. I restock, and return to the dungeon.
