Macros help

Forgive me for asking a question that has probably been answered already
numerous times. Can anyone direct me to, or help me, in explaining how to use macros. I have played for awhile now. but am unfamiliar with their use.

Thanks

In modern Vanilla, you access the macros and keymaps menu from the '=' menu (older versions had it under the '@' menu). From here, you can choose to create a new macro or keymap. The game prompts you for a key to bind the action to, and then the list of keys that should be "pressed" when that key is pressed. For example, say that you had inscribed your first mage book with "@m1", and wanted to be able to cast Magic Missile at the closest enemy by hitting !. You would create a new keymap, bound to !, that does the action "*tm1a" (note that this assumes you've set the option to re-use your old target by default).

Macros and keymaps are subtly different. Macros work all the time, even if you're in the middle of a -more- prompt or a menu. Keymaps only work when the game is waiting for your next action during normal gameplay. Some people like using macros because they can auto-clear -more- prompts by sticking a bunch of \e at the beginning of their macro (\e is how you represent "escape" in a macro or keymap). Personally I think doing so is dangerous, and always use keymaps instead.

Remember to save your macros and keymaps once you've created them, or else you'll have to recreate them the next time you open your character's file.
