Comp 79 challenge: Can you save me?

I got myself into a tight spot with this comp 79 character. I couldn't save him, but maybe you can. I saw death coming so I made a backup copy for exactly this purpose. For the purposes of this challenge, let's just say that escaping the level equates to victory.

It shouldn't take very long, so feel free to try as many times as you like, but I'm really interested in your success or failure on your first try. I'm curious if my survival instincts are significantly worse than those of my fellow bander's.

There are two things you should know in order to make a solid first attempt.
1. You are currently, quite recently, confused.
2. Your amulet of escaping will not be recharged any time soon.

Give it a swirl and post you results here. Afterwords, if you're interested in what happened to me (possibly spoilerish), check out Gondo 11 on the Comp 79 ladder. FAAngband 1.0.3.

OK, I managed to make the stairs. My first move was to try and back away from the LRH; I bumped into the wall, and he stole some coins and the Banish Evil staff and left. Recovered from confusion, and fought ogres in the doorway for a bit until HP got too low, then used the last ?*Destruct*. I still wasn't safe - I had to dig to get to the staircase, and the LRH came back twice more. The first time he paralyzed and blinded me and stole Blood Novitiate; the second he stole cash and my last piece of Waybread.

I decided to eat the mushroom, which turned out to be Naivety. The rogue stole something and teleported away. I ate the beorning cake, because hey, maybe it removes confusion? It gorges me, but confusion wears off the very next turn. I think the honey had something to do with it. I moved to the ne corner of the outer wall right next to the Basilisk and *destructed*, sensed surroundings, then walked towards the stairs... right before I got to the stairs I saw the rogue again, but I was able to make it to the stairs and descend before he showed up.

Yes, I do play like a bumbling fool. If it had been a situation my character came across, I probably would've tried waiting for the teleport activation to kick in, if the rogue didn't kill me of course.

This was my original course of action, but the LHR blinded immediately blinded me, at which point I re-wielded the amulet of escaping and retreated into the corner of the room, looking for the (hopefully useful) item likely to be there.

Sadly, at least from my point of view, upon attempting this again survival was no problem. I ate the mushroom, as previously (just because it's honestly the only reasonable move I could think of), the LHR stole and blinked away, confusion wore off. I walked out into the northern corridor and killed a few ogres then shadow shifted to the passageway just further north, very near to the stairs, which I reached no problem, virtually unscathed.

I thought the blindness would be unavoidable in the replay, thus making this difficult, but I haven't been able to reproduce it.
