YAWP - dwarf priest r2025

Finally after countless deaths managed to win with a priest

Potions with the new item distribution were well more than enough, especially for a priest; I think overall I had to drink only something like a couple of healing, one life and 6-7 mana potions.

Early abundant potions of contemplation/brawn and an early find of thorin were what allowed particularly fast diving this game (at least for me).

Note: clairvoyance almost feels like cheating, probably should increase the mana cost there

I would be curious how you fought him as a priest. I found I meleed a lot more than I expected, on runes when I could. I didn't have holy might ammo, only slay evil, and admit that I feel it's a little cheesy to shoot arrows at point-blank range (or 10 feet away, depending on your point of view), so I only shot when I could which wasn't so often due to summons in the way and the destruction zone. I cast a handful of orbs but most of the damage was done with my MoD. Maybe that isn't the optimal technique though.

No, your method is pretty much the bread and butter method for priests. Priests fighting with launchers should only be the best option when you find some really awesome launcher+missiles combo.

I used pretty much exactly that method with my winner Priest (linky). Admittedly this guy had it pretty easy due to insane item finds (+23 speed ring, The One Ring, Bladeturner, Ringil), but as long as you can get your speed up to the appropriate level (+20 permanent?) the tactic works.

Since the major strength of Priests is almost endless healing (and some 0-fail escapes like WoD and Alter Reality) I think it seems pretty logical to rely on just standing in melee and engaging in a war of attrition with Morgoth. As long as you have the requisite speed, decent melee output and can TeleOther/BanishEvil when necessary, you're basically going to beat him barring some seriously bad luck or a missed key or something. (Oh, yeah, you'll probably need a few !oRestoreMana, the amount mainly depends on how much damage you can deal per turn.)

EDIT: Also, priests using launchers which launch pointy(!) things just seems wrong, given that they normally don't use pointy sticks. I suppose slings might be ok, thematically.

EDIT#2: Actually, I found RoP a little detrimental at times. Yes, it saves you getting hit a lot, but it also means that Morgoth's summons get to stick around much longer than they otherwise would. Of course, getting hit less means less healing, which in turn means less !oRM... I'm not sure what my point is; it was just an observation.

I didn't have PB9 but had sufficient !rMana and ?destruction that it wasn't a concern. I had to pick 2 from MoD, 0% fail, and base 20 speed so I went in with 1% fail rate. Not sure if that was an unnecessary risk. There was only 1 time I failed a *phase where, if mana stormed, it would have been the end.

Regarding runes, I didn't use them every time we exchanged blows, but whenever I could. If I phased away and found myself in a position where I had a turn to spare, I laid a rune. If he summoned I still phased away. If I found myself near an unbroken rune with turns to spare I got on it. If I didn't have time to cast one I didn't worry about it.

DSMs are way more common than they used to be. Ego DSMs are also more common than they should be (IMO), which of course means that artifacts DSMs are more readily-available.

The DSM problems should be fixed with ewert's newer patch. We'll see... if not we can bump rarity down even farther.

Actually i never even used them, as i already had isildur or even soulkeeper (can't remember) when i found all of them. i was tempted by razorback but aggravation and resistance holes stopped me from equipping it.

The main help for low turncount were an early thorin and lots of early +1/-1 stat potions, plus some general luck.

Also i should probably add that all the ego arrows now available didn't impact that much on my turncount, as due to my playstile and stronger melee+healing and OOD i almost never fired from a distance.
