Play FAangband.
I downloaded one of the nightly versions of Angband and while I could play my character with it, I couldn't use the save file to create a new character. So in frustration I started playing FA. I'm really liking the change of pace and the expanded world in FA. It seems that its a lot harder than Angband though...which is fine since I feel like I can get a win without too much trouble in angband. Which isn't to say that i'm as good as a lot of you vets, but I do feel like I have a basic understanding of what you can't and can do in the game. So FA is a whole new challenge, I feel like its built for people that are a bit bored with just going down into the dungeon. Its like Angband but more fun basically. I just wish that more people were playing it as I think that it could be even better with more involvement from the community.
When I have a question about Angband I know that I'll be able to get several different and equally valid opinions...FA, not really other than Nick. Which makes FA a good challenge since its virgin ground. Anyway what I'm really trying to say is that we should support FA a bit since its really fun game that Nick has put a lot of effort into and I think some of the Angband vets would like it just as much as V. |

I second the call to play FA!
I would say there is a little more FA experience around than you give credit for. Though a little quiet of late, discussion tends to take place through character dumps rather than on the forums. |

Well, I'd love to take advantage of that experience although maybe I'd get more out of the game if I just toughed it out and discovered things for myself? What do you think?

Self-discovery is a big part of self-development. It's not all that different, just use the map to see where you're going. Shift-O to learn special abilities, Shift-H to move your home, IIRC. FA rocks.

i haven't played much FA in a while, and usually play it in dungeon-only mode, but i concur that it is a truly exceptional variant, and has more than a few ideas that would greatly benefit vanilla.

Thanks guys
![]() I think that people are playing V more and variants less these days, largely due to the resurgence in V development from takkaria's maintainership and the resulting community engagement. Not that I would complain if more people played FA...

Note that 67 of those are Psi's (with 24 winners) and 38 are mine (with 1 winner).

I don't care about metrics (at least when they're not related to metric spaces/topologies), but FA is just feckin' cool.

You could certainly never use that way of measuring with DaJAngband. At least 90% of the ladder dumps are mine.
