I pulled a Dumb one

Just the other day I was just taking another run through I think was level 4 and I was level 9 nothing could hurt me much and I walk into a room with like 14 spiders all along a wall and thought "Hey look free Exp!" and ran into the spiders and started attacking killing one instantly but then I went into the crowd a little more and was surrounded by spiders when ever I attacked (or tried persay) the spiders took there turn 8 where around me in a few turns I went from 140 so hp to 32 and was like "Oh my god!" so i tried to escape but it was too late my health quickly dropped when I tried to leave the group of spiders and and in what was about 15 seconds I lost my level 9 half-troll warrior worst part was I never made it to the surface that was my original intention but I got greedy and wanted to collect more stuff to sell when I got up anyone have the same problem happen or anything similar?

Moral of the story: Never let yourself get surrounded by anything. Fight monsters (especially quick monsters) from hallways. You could have quaffed your potion of speed and perhaps have had a chance to run away, or better yet, always carry scrolls of phase door (or teleport) to get out of this situation.

Also, the use of the punctuation mark known as a period would be most appreciated. It'd make you sound like less of a highschool girl (no offense ).

It's a well known tactic to sell your starting equipment (the broad sword and chain mail) for a couple hundred gp, and take that money to buy much better starting equipment: buy a whip or a main gauche (or as light a weapon as you can find), and you'll get three attacks per turn instead of just one. Also sell the mail and you can buy some Soft Leather Armour, Leather Boots, Leather Gloves, a cloak and a cheap helmet of some kind, and you'll have the same AC, much less weight to carry around and more gold.

There's absolutely no reason to be carrying any of the above - it's only waying you down. Most of the above is harmful to your char, and the rest is useless.

Probably this was a death dump and all the crap was unID'd stuff in the backpack.

Good point - I normally read/quaff/zap any unidentified scroll/potion/wand that I find in the early levels, so I wasn't thinking of that. At any rate, there was no need for the *16* torches and the lantern.

Ha I died again today -by getting surrounded, but by my scroll of summon monster. I was almost out of the blue when my health dropped from around 30 to 0 at least I had my guy up to level 12 this time and I made it to around floor 9 I will play again later and use the advise thanks

lol good Idea btw I just made a new char and sold my gear Im buying my stuff and heading into the dungeon deeps I will tell you all what happens later.

(I know you can't wait right?)[/sarcasm]

I got my guy to level 9 and was on floor 5 when i started using unI-ed scrolls one was of light the other made 3 pretty powerful creatures 2 strong the other unique (very strong to me) I took out a novice thing and almost the other creature then tried to run at 30 life made it up the stairs with 1 and died of poison on level 4 just on the stairs lol I will try again later it seemed like a good strategy to me cause I leveled up quite fast.

The best strategy for a pretty quick start is to try to go down fairly quickly and avoid being overwhelmed. The quicker you go down, the less chance you have of making a mistake or getting unlucky on any one level. A warrior should be safe down to dl 20 or so.

Specific points:
1) sell the longsword. Most warriors can get 3 or 4 blows at the outset. (4 blows for Dunadan, High-elf, or (barely) Half-Orc if you get your strength and dex just right.) Start with a dagger, main gauche, or possibly a Rapier. If you can't find one of those, even a whip is better than the long-sword.
2) With the money you get, buy a scroll of Recall, and possibly a !CSW (cure serious wounds), and a scroll of phase door or two. You can also sell !Berserk and buy !heroism instead.

With that equipment, you should be able to kill Bullroarer at cl 2 or so. Go down fast, and start picking up wands to sell. As a warrior, you can go to dl 7 (or even 10) just by taking every stair, and killing a few monsters. It is easy. Stay away from big groups of orcs and orc uniques, because they can easily overwhelm you until you get a higher-damage weapon.

Once you get a few valuable wands, and maybe a useless ego weapon*, recall, sell them, and buy the following as quickly as you can:
1) CCW (10 or more is good; 5 is enough to start). You can't afford to be confused, and you need a way to fight strong monsters.
2) Phase Door. You need to be able to escape for a little breather, or avoid being surrounded.
3) !Heroism (just a few). You need to avoid fear attacks, and it is useful against uniques to get a noticeably better chance to hit.
4) Damage-enchantment on your melee weapon. Even a dagger+5 does a lot of damage if you are getting 4 blows.
5) A good longbow. If you don't find one on the floor, buy one and enchant it up. You want to get both weapons to +7 damage ASAP. Later, get it to +7 to_hit as well.
6) 3-5 scrolls of recall. 1 to go down, 1 for the return trip, and some spares in case of fire/acid attacks.
7) A staff of teleportation, and any scrolls of Teleportation and Teleport Level that show up in the black market.

Don't bother buying any kind of armor, unless you see some Dwarven or Resistance (very unlikely) . You will find plenty in the dungeon. Don't bother enchanting it much; just stay away from acid attacks and replace it with what you find in the dungeon when it wears out.


*Useless ego weapons are "Slay" weapons that don't give you your maximum number of blows. What you really want is a lightweight branded weapon (the *Thancs are great early), or a +attacks weapon, where even a broken dagger is good.
