Recommended Depth Levels for my Char Level
Hey I just downloaded Angband a little while ago and I'm learning quickly. I'm on floor 3 and I'm in a room stock full of invisible centipedes. I've been farming them for exp for a while now and I'm at level 23 and rising. I'm planning on farming them till they stop giving exp. But my question is what are the recommended levels I be for each depth. I can't imagine level 23 for depth level 3 is necessary. I'm playing a dunadan warrior.
Thanks in advance! |

Depends on your playstyle, but at least to begin with keeping your character level in line with your depth is a fair approximation. However that assumes that you have equipment in line with a level 23 character - which you won't have if you've been scumming DL3.
The one thing I find odd though is that Clear Centipedes only become native at DL15 and they don't breed... |

Well I don't know if they were clear centipedes or not, I'm just assuming because I can't see them (since they're invisible lol) and they crawled on me and poisoned me. On another note I got to level 24 before leveling was too slow to go on and decided to continue. I got to level 5 only to be mobbed by a bunch of spiders. I got careless because I thought I was a super high level and died... ~2 hours worth of grinding down the drain =( *sigh*
Also you never really gave me a straight answer... If theirs 100 floors do I want to gain a level on every even floor? (be level 2 on floor 2, be level 3 on floor 4, level 4 on floor 6, etc.) That seems to me like you would be vastly underleveled... Anybody got a recommendation? |

That is a very broad guideline and will depend on your race, class and ability. As you get better you will want to keep CL < DL. Also there is no need to reach character level 50 to win. |

You pretty much have to deny cave spiders the opportunity to surround you at almost all costs. They are, in some respects, deadlier than a equal-sized pack of snagas. [There are several ways to do this reliably. Phase Door is not one of them.] |

Yes I like playing slow but even I think cl 23 is a bit excessive for dl 3. What I like doing is going down the dungeon and clearing the entire floor of monsters. When my inventory is full I go back up sell the stuff buy better stuff. Doing this I find that i do not follow the cl = dl average with my cl being 2*dl and even 3*dl but after I reach about cl 20 i find going down easier. SO recommended depth is whatever you feel comfortable with. And it also depends on equipment. Better equipment, like see invisible stuff, lets you go down faster. You dont really have to farm worms to level up either just dont go where you think there are monsters that will kick your a** and if you do find such monsters just run away, level up and try again.

In any case, farming worm masses is a fairly useless tactic: it takes forever, it doesn't improve your playing style, and it doesn't net you any equipment or gold. Character level, especially for warriors, is only modestly related to survivability. Stats, equipment, and inventory are really what counts. |

If I find another room full of monsters that respawn quickly and I can grind them for quick easy experience I think I'm still gonna do it, but like you said I think the main thing that resulted in my downfall was gear and the fact that I was surrounded. I got cocky because I was level 24 at dl 5 but I still got pwnt lol. Oh well I decided to reroll a half troll warrior instead and he hits like a truck lol so I guess its not all bad. Live and learn, thanks for the advice.

You should explore the dungeon at whatever rate feels comfortable to you; or, if you want to get better faster, explore the dungeon at a faster rate than what seems comfortable.
Note that the main indicator of character power, as Pete Mack mentioned, is not so much level as equipment and inventory. So farming worm masses, while not detrimental to your character, doesn't really get you all that far because they're not dropping any items. Good luck

I find it better to go looking for xp with a mage rather than equipment at least until I can cast ID at a reasonable rate in a nice little corridor standing on stairs. with my usual play style I haven't filled my inventory by the time i can cast ID, my problem comes just after that stage...
