Took a look at the Mages on the Hengband ladder, and decided maybe going high HD isn't the right way after all. So I went for the ultra stealthy, high SP approach with Spectre.

[Dlvl Tower] [Clvl 29] 2:11

Currently at 151 HP, 164 SP... when's the last time a non-Sorceror character had more SP than HP? Damage output is a piddly 61, and that's thanks to both Sting and a =oSlaying(+11, +7)

Should have named this girl "Green Glutton Ghost." While farming Quartz Veins, I would make 45 Rations of Food (through one burn of my SP), and that would take me from Weak to Full. Each run through rations would net me about 60k gold. Have 7 million now. So that's 120 runs, or about 5400 rations of food(!!!)

Also, I have perfected my Macro for Quartz Vein farming:

Set "right arrow key" to be mapped to:
666666666666666666666666666666666666666664444444444R9999\r

That way, when you press right, it kills all the quartz veins in the row, moves you back to the left most, and waits for the Quartz Veins to regenerate. You can just mash the right arrow button, and it'll earn you money at amazing speed!

Time to get shopping.

Two hours of store scumming later...

HP getting to respectable levels at 463. Damage output is still pretty bad, but no longer worthless (132 damage per round). I would have liked a better bow, but 150 days of store scumming yielded only nothing of note.

And another 45 minutes of scumming later, I manage to cover all resists except Chaos (well, I have glove swap, but would have to eat a 25% SP penalty for it, as well as a -5 DEX opportunity cost).

Pop-gun mage offense, as always. Highest damage spell is Doom Bolt, 17d8 (76.5) damage for 19 SP. Mana Burst 3d5+48 (57) for 6 SP. Magic Missile 9d4 (22.5) for 1 SP.

Compare those to my 132 / rnd melee damage, and my 150 damage Staff of Power.

And, of course, the RNG saw it fitting to give Esper a plethora of renewable healing, since Esper eventually has access to 0% Fail Herbal Healing... 3 Rods of Healing and a Staff of Healing. I never find anything like this on warriors or rogues, of course.

Mutations roulette in the Vapor Quest quickly picked up: He-man, White Aura, Aching Joints, and Manic-Depressive. Purging at Zul got rid of only the last two :-D

And now it's time to eat the 25% SP loss to cover RChaos, so I don't pick up any nasty mutations.

OK, it's probably a bad sign that I have to burn a !oSpeed to kill Gachapin. I may have to carefully skim the top of the Dragon Lair for a bit... no ESP until lvl 40...

Thanks for the macro tip ... Just what I need. More gold ... Faster! It works better for craft casters if you add satisfy hunger to the sequence. In fact, if you just put a weight on your keyboard, you can walk away and come back later to max gold, but I didn't go that far as I felt that might be considered "scumming" ;D

Good luck with the spectre mage!

[Dlvl Lair] [Clvl 34] 6:19

OK, I humbly retract my earlier annoyance at having a Nature mage buy 3 Rods of Healing. Those guys are sustaining me for Wyrm fights remarkably well. Against a Great Storm Wyrm or Great Ice Wyrm, 1 Rod of Healing + my 500 HP is usually enough to win. Rods of Disarm and Teleport Other for extra SP.

Wondering if it's worthwhile to switch to Death at 36 for Vampirism True... it probably is, assuming fail rates aren't terrible: 300 damage for 35 SP vs 57 damage for 6 SP.

Lvl 36 and Vampirism True was a HUGE power-up. Whereas before I could win against Great Storm Wyrms, but would have to rely on -oHealing, and would have to flee if anything else came by, with Vampire True, I can tank a Great Storm Wyrm along with 2 Dracolisks and not worry at all about dying.

My huge stockpile of Teleport Other and Disarm Rods are seeing lots of action too. 2 so far blew up.

[Dlvl Cloning Pits] [Clvl 37] 7:53

Cloning Pits complete, though not without a few nasty surprises. I figured Father Dagons would resist the Vampirism, so that was fine. But so did the Its and Bokrugs, which were not expected. The Its took a while to hunt down... good thing I had True Resistance to deal with the hydras!

This character's actually getting to be really fun to play now. Esper has to run at the first sight of a Ringwraith or a higher Lich, but she really can kick dragon butt.

380 damage per round, swinging 53% against AC 175! Superb stealth even when Berserking! Gotta love that randart armor (*STEALTH*), with its +4 Speed, Stealth, and CON (plus RChaos)

Where's my Spiritual Enlightenment!? I need to it boost Aglarang, dammit! On the bright side, my kit is coming together. Brand (with RShard!), Incanus, =oSpeed(+10), Hell Collar. Need Jewel and a =oExtraAttacks(+3). Also need 4th spellbooks.

Also, it's good to see my Virtues moved back to Neutral, thanks to Unlife from the Death Realm.

Finally, Spiritual Enlightenment was found, and I boosted Aglarang from +7,+7 to +15,+15... the equivalent of an extra Cambeleg! Switched to Chaos, as many monsters are starting to resist Vampirism True, and 0% fail Word of Destruction is now needed to controlling out of control situations.

Mana Storm is at 27% fail right now, so that's 18% fail at lvl 50.
.82 * 500 = 410 damage per round, not bad.

Destroyer is destroyed! No resources used, just lots of Destruction, Teleport, Mana Storms, Eat Magic, and Herbal Healing. Which means I'm probably ready for the Serpent.

Would like to be level 50 and wear Incanus, but I need RChaos and +4 CON more than I need Economize Mana right now.

Wow, this marks the first time, in a long, long time, that I won without the Jewel. Anyways, 6 rods blew up in the final fight (had 20 of each to go).

There was only one close call in the final fight, and it was due entirely to my stupidity. Note how I didn't bring any ?oTeleportation. Well, I figured I wouldn't need it, with my 0% fail Teleport spell. So, of course, during the fight at one point, I suddenly my myself surrounded by unique summons, and at 1 / 429 SP, 400 HP, and no reliable way of escape.

I weighed my options: Quaff a !o*Healing*? Quaff a !oRestoreMana? Move into a nearby wall? That's when I suddenly realized I had picked up Teleport At Will mutation through the course of polymorph via failed Chaos Spells. 3% fail, but that seemed a lot better than my other options.

After that, I'd never let myself go below 100 SP.

Why not the Harness for the final battle? Or were you relying on Mana Storms?

On 14.4.2010 06:28 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:
Yep, pure mana storms. Couldn't use the Harness because Faramir was my only source of RConf! Also swapped my =oSlaying for =oSpeed(+12) since I was going pure spells.

(Equipment this game was kind of weird... White Aura doesn't seem to be all that it's cracked up to be.)

Lvl 31 - 35: The "grind" levels. Skim Dragon Lair for killable monsters. Be very patient and careful.
Lvl 36 - 44: Vampirism True. Prey exclusively on Great Wyrms. (Watch out for undead)
Lvl 45 - 50: Mana Storm. At this point, the game should be easy. Only a handful of high uniques warrant attention.
