So, what precisely is the challenge? I'm going with average items only. I notice you also have some Iron Man options, but hopefully those aren't required ;) As a mage approach, I don't think I can win at all, but I definitely can't do it by forcing levels small. Well, feel free to declare shenanigans if the challenge is stricter than just average items.

So, I messed up farming the Sewer quest since I had swapped my attack macro from magic missile to mana burst, forgot about it, and killed the 4 undead masses in about 300ms before I realized my mistake. To top it off, the reward for the quest was an excellent feanorian lamp, which I promptly sold (250gp). (Should I have destroyed it? I'm not sure what is legal :)

So, in frustration, I hop into the Tower. After 3 stair climbs, killing adjacent monsters, I spot a quartz vein! Yay! I teleport around him, clear out a pack of tough black ogres, and consider that I am home free! Just rounding the corner and *WHAM*. A Colbran took me down to 18hp in a single round. ?Teleport and I land next to a quartz vein. He attacked, but only brought me down to 8hp. I back off, and begin farming since the quartz veins are now between me and the colbran.

I hardly have any food, and no lightning resistance. So this farming effort will be a primer, allowing me to scum for resistance, ~Z and some !CCW, ?Teleport, ?Recall and other essentials.

I'm guess my initial con is 18/80 or so ... 18/130 base con is a requirement, and even with that, I will be trying to win the game with around 500hp. Very low odds ...

[CL23:Tower] 00:30
Oh, wait. How can I get resistance? Surely, playing a Draconian should not be a requirement! I realized my folly before buying armor of resistance though ...

So, Blue Dragon Scale Mail will allow me to farm more quartz veins. That's good. Maybe I can just buy some PDSM?

And, my con went from 18 to 18/16 on a single boost, so I was certain I was screwed. Nope, 18/120 intrinsic with a 116% life rating. All other stats are 18/100 except charisma at 18/80. That's probably as good as I can hope for even though that last point of con is tempting (3/4 hp per level).

Feanorian lamp #15 or so was the *first* non-excellent lamp! As you can see, I am quite ecstatic. I also saw about 10 lanterns, 9 of which were excellent. I don't think I ever realized that light sources were 95%+ excellent before ... Also, a +5 Amulet of Int and See Invisible really pissed me off :D

Anyway, I've been lucky with Dragon Armor. I just need a really good dragon shield and a ring of speed, and I'll call it quits on the scumming.

On 17.7.2010 01:41 chris wrote:
[CL33:Town] 02:38
Well, that's enough scumming for me. No RoS. No PDSM. No Armageddon Tome. No "Int(+6). No =ChaosResist. But I think I did pretty well, with an amazing arsenal of magic items and 4 -Healing. 2 =Con(+6), but they will both have to go for the end game. My end game hp might stretch as high as 575 ... It should be doable, but is a long shot!

Time to kill some dragons ...

[CL36:DL60] 03:33
First ring of speed!! Only +5, and it also means I now must play without confusion resistance, but I am still very happy.

I have a 12% fail 192hp magic rocket, but I'd rather use my near 0% faill near 400hp wand of rocket! The only advantage the spell offers is that I can kill more than one monster before rushing back to town for recharging.

On 17.7.2010 03:08 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:
Wait, what do you mean by "average" items? As far as I can tell, a lot of your items would pseudo as "good".. like the Wizardstaff (+6, +7) and Dragon Helm [8, +4].

So it looks like you're also doing "average" and "good." Unless you want to find a Disenchanter Mold and disenchant everything... But then I'm not sure how you'd disenchant the PDSM... maybe you have to read a ?oCurseArmor on it first?

On 17.7.2010 03:22 chris wrote:
You're right ... I'm trying no ego items, no artifacts, but I mispoke. Average only would just be ridiculous!

[CL37:DL60] 03:52
OK, that's pretty good resistance coverage. All but Sound and Chaos, but I'd rather play without Chaos than Confusion resistance at the moment (I can still cast a 0% word of destruction while hallucinating!). I don't think I've ever had this good luck with dragon armor this early in the game ... I don't want to jinx myself, or anything, but I might be able to cover all resistance with just 3 good pieces of dragon armor! And its a darn shame I can't wear dragon gloves ...

I think this ring of con +6 will be worth 200hp at CL50. It will really hurt to put it down, but I don't see any other alternatives. Maybe if I find a RoS +25?

On 17.7.2010 14:01 chris wrote:
Oh, I thought of a way to disenchant PDSM. Simply, by failing to successfully cast high level Chaos spells! Of course, if I were truly playing "average" only, then I wouldn't be allowed to wear the "good" item for purposes of disenchanting it ... Perhaps an exception could be allowed, so that it is OK to wear "good" items in town or something ... (I'm pretty sure this would work ... stuff gets disenchanted even if I resist disenchantment. So I'm guessing that if the item resists disenchantment, that won't matter either.)

On 17.7.2010 18:23 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:
Ooh... I just thought of something else! How about a game where you're only allowed to use cursed items? Meaning, items that were cursed to begin with, not stuff that get cursed from you being cursed.

Cursed artifacts would also be allowed, provided you don't enchant them. So, you could use Calris and Stormbringer and Thanos.

But you can't use anything normal, like Dragon Gloves. Hm... this might actually be more fun, considering there's going to be a good number of cursed randarts that get generated... getting ones without a negative pval will be tricky though!

Dave

On 17.7.2010 23:52 chris wrote:
Would Cursed only be easier than average only? Probably ... Most cursed rand-arts that I run into suck, though. How would you kill stuff? Stormbringer works. And Terror Mask counts if you are not a warrior type (though it means no spells!) So, maybe play a non-casting rogue or something ...

You should try it! Then, when I notice whether or not it seems doable, I'll jump in to copycat you :)

Plain Jane has a Mana Storm! This is still going to be very tough. Speed will be a huge issue, given that an 18 strength is as high as I can go! I will need 2 +17 speed rings for the end game, I think, as my encumbrance will probably be -8 or greater :P The other hope is that I can ditch wearing armor altogether. I will have to get really lucky with other dragon gear, but it would save me 20lbs!

Dead ... Mycen double moved me, tossing sound my way twice. I never could get my speed up, and sound resistance? Well, I didn't have it ... Its up to you, Dave, to complete this challenge. I don't think I have the patience for another attempt!

For the cursed challenge, I propose the following:
[1] Rings, Amulets, and Lites are free slots. Anything goes.
[2] You may wear average equipment (How else can you get started?)
[3] You may wear cursed equipment. But it must stay cursed. If the curse goes away, you must discard it.
[4] You may not wear Ringil and wait for Scatha to curse it! You can only put on average or cursed items.
[5] You may not wear dragon stuff unless it is average or cursed to begin with. So no using a Disenchanter Mold to get your dragon gloves down to +0 enchantment. You can't put on good stuff!

Optional? You can enchant cursed stuff ... but you can't enchant over +0? I'm thinking about Twilight here. At (-40, -60), it is of course unthinkable. But at (+0, +0)? Hardly overwhelming, considering you can't swap it out (unless you wish to forsake ever using it again!). And that AFC will be tagging you all game!

Monk doesn't need much equipment and would handle cursed challenge maybe to easy. Poison needle is always average I think. :-)

Hi Chris,

I don't know if I like (1). The Jewel is really powerful, because it simultaneously helps with Resistances, stats, and speed. Why not just cursed and average? With cursed also refering to {terrible} things like The Plain Gold Ring.

I think we can make the rule "You can never put on anything {good} or better. But you can pick it up to pseudo-ID and sell." I think allowing selling good and better items really helps make the early game less of a pain than it already is.

Hm. What do you mean by enchanting cursed stuff? You can enchant Twilight up to (+0,-20), or (+10,0)? But I think that Twilight is probably not worth using for the long term even if you can do that.

Marcus-- this is not trivial at all! How do you plan on getting resistances with only average and cursed? Remember that all Dragon gear (PDSM, etc) are usually at least {good}. Speed then is also a problem, because you must get speed exclusively from innate or rings. And besides, you can never kill Uniques with Poison Needles...

On 18.7.2010 17:17 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:
Hm. Maybe a Draconian Mindcrafter? Draconian's just all-around good for resistances and Stats, and Mindcrafter gives you ESP and RConf. The problem here is how to do damage against the Serpent, since Psycho-Spear is only a measly 225. Wands of Rockets? I suppose that would be doable...

For resistances, the only ones I'll really need are Shard, Nexus, and Chaos. Both Ring slots are going to be =oSpeed, Amulet will be "oWisdom, so I'm basically stuck to cursed armor pieces. Hrm. Not that many things give RShards.

Twilight can go to (+0, +0). You will have to use ?EnchantHit or Damage as well as the enchant service. If either + to hit or damage goes positive, you lose! I guess Calris can go to (+0, +20) since it started with that +20 damage. Same with the Falcon Sword of Destruction.

I actually think Twilight might be very useful, though not so much for melee. It would be another +10 speed and Fire immunity, which a mage might like!

So you are OK with any amulet? And of course, you need to be allowed rings of speed other than the cursed variety! Are you OK with rings of power, or just the One Ring?

I added the Jewel since I thought this challenge too hard. I'd be willing to give it up though ... It might be fun just to see how far you can go without any expectation of ever winning.

But getting started is so darn hard. I think Spectres are out (except for the casting variety) since they are just too darn weak.

I've never paid that much attention to *id* cursed artifacts. Sometimes they have resists, and I think once I got a cursed one that was pretty good. I even found cursed dragon gloves or some such once with some useful resists, so it can happen. Just not so likely. I'm figuring on using Unusual Rooms for this one. Is the Spectral DSM cursed? I can't recall ...

Spectral Wyrm Scale Mail is cursed, I think. I'd say no rings of Power other than the One Ring (not sure you'd want to use those over a =oSpeed or an =oConstitution anyway.. unless you're planning on meleeing?).

Amulets, hm, tricky. Sacred Knights and Dwarves are both quite useful for this challenge. On the flip side, if you use your Amulet slot for resistances, you probably would get further with "oResistance, which could potentially give you RPois and a high resistance.

Hm, I must say that this is appearing pretty daunting. Maybe the right thing to do is to say you can break the cursed-or-average rule exactly once for the entirety of the game? Then you can choose whether you want to use Brand or PDSM or Jewel or whatever, but you only get one.

On 18.7.2010 22:09 chris wrote:
Well, originally I wanted to free the Ring, Amulet and Lite slots since you can't get cursed rand-arts in those slots (And disallowing rings of speed is just crazy). Plus, even with 2 rings of speed you are likely to be a bit too slow for the end game, unless you luck into some awesome rings. If the best you can find are a pair of +10 rings, you probably won't make it. So, I was figuring the +3 speed from the Jewel would help there, though not much.

Getting a free pass for PDSM? I like that less than allowing the Jewel :D

Melee Approach:
Falcon Sword of Destruction, Terror Mask, Harness of Hell. Should be enough ... but you wouldn't be able to cast spells.

Other Melee Approaches
Stormbringer. Soulcrusher. Anubis. Gothmog.

Missile Approach:
Fuhgeddaboudit. Harad has the TY_CURSE but is not itself cursed.

Magic Approach:
Cursed Wizardstaff. Twilight. Thanos (What's one AFC when you can have two)? This is probably the most promising I can think of, but I just did a Spectre Chaos HM and *failed*. Well, the powerful Mana Storm made me cocky I guess ... Also, there's always Beruthiel!!! .... Not!

Priests can cast PDSM as a spell (Ultimate Resistance) and are worth considering.

Look for Rusty Chain Mail ... it might belong to a high priest of Morlock (11 resistances!).

Well, Speed rings pseudo as {average} if they don't have anything else, so if we're going {cursed} and {average} they're OK by default.

Would you necessarily go for PDSM, I wonder, if you had 1 free good/ego/artifact? Sure, all resistances are nice, but there's also Dor-Lomin, Feanor, Brand, Incanus, potentially +10 STR/DEX/CON randart cloaks.

Robe of Twlight is considered {excellent}, no?

Missile approach is doable, but unusual. You'd have to go for a Ninja, and use Iron Spikes. Hm, that's actually sounding quite appealing, because Ninja get free speed boosts.

Also, you can't WIELD good, ego, or artifacts, but I'd argue that technically you neer WIELD ammo in Hengband, so maybe ego ammo is considered OK if you use {average} Longbows or cursed artifact Longbows?

Yeah, but a +21 RoS should be considered "good" ... Seems like a bug :)

What about a Death Scythe?

How about forcetrainer then, they can speed up really good at lvl 44 and have a lot of spells both innate and from a realm. Maybe spells from a realm that can cover resistances.
