I basically played this like fizzix's fightless mage, although I didn't hold myself to the rule. I haven't used a single bow, opting to sell them instead, and I've barely melee'd anything. For most of the game I wore a ring of escaping, so I couldn't attack if I wanted to! It saved me from accidentally attacking something I'd rather blast with a spell anyway though. The reduced success rate for magic was negligible because I could identify most of the time, didn't mind resting, and magic missile's fail-rate was unchanged (obviously the only spell you'll ever need).

This is basically my first time using a mage (or atleast, getting anywhere with it) since the changes to mana-cost. I really like how cheap a lot of the spells are now, but don't really feel like it made a difference. I end up resting a lot. With my winning mage, I rested just about as much I think, but with the higher mana-costs. Against a single opponent, it costs less to use only magic missile (with phase door, if necessary), because magic missile has a better mana:damage ratio (that it's unresistable doesn't hurt). Against multiple enemies, if they're in a line I'm going to still just use magic missile, albeit with fleeing with phase door more often. Lightning bolt is too expensive (or too weak) to use. I had a couple lightning bolt rods for a lot of the game, and I used those often, nice for softening up opponents without exausting mana, but as far as using my own mana goes, I want to actually take out some opponents before phasing out. Just softening them up (which is the only thing lightning bolt seems to be good for) doesn't really help me if I'm out of mana. Once I have the mana to really use it, it doesn't do enough damage to be worth it.

Also, sleep/slow/confusion spells are still useless, which is a shame. By the time I can learn sleep/slow, I've already sold my wands with the same effects (but with no mana-cost). Slow is basically useless anyway since it doesn't effect anything that's fast, and sleep is only useful for when I've made a mistake and deserve to die. Confuse is just a more chance-based sleep.

Relying purely on spells is also annoying against ghosts. Why can't I cast spells against things in the walls? I can hit them with my fists or dagger but can't blast them with an acid bolt? More importantly, isn't it bad enough that ringwraiths follow you through the walls even after you've teleported them away? Why must it be so difficult to teleport other them in the first place? You know how tedious it is to phase door over and over until I'm in the same room as them but they're not in the wall anymore (to avoid getting 1-hit-ko-nether-bolt'd while removing them from my workspace)?

Another annoyance for using pure spells is midgame when there's so many monsters and uniques that resist the elements. Magic missile takes SO long to kill strong stuff :(

Spear of light sure is expensive for a spell that is useless as an attack. Wands or rods of light are far superior and easily available. ESP, detection, and clairvoyance render it mostly obsolete anyway.

Is there some reason why my 1-turn detection spell can't see invisibles? My invisible detection spell doesn't really help me fight invisibles since the turn I can see them is always the turn they're inside the wall.

Warrior's weapons can't be burnt up, and disenchantments are pretty mild. Why do my books have to burn up (forcing me to carry extra copies, aggravating my lack of strength)? Everything else is basically effecting me the same way as the warrior. My scrolls are getting burnt, my potions shattered, my armour corroded, etc.

I tried to keep dilligent notes, but failed to some extent. It's most noteworthy things, but not all.

I picked an elf mage because it doesn't have a negative to int, isn't cheap, and isn't a hobbit (I already won with a hobbit mage). That left elf and half elf, and elf has res_light (and +2 int). Just like my winning hobbit, I'm at 4900' with 169 hp. I've got anywhere between 220 and 270 mana, depending on whether I worship speed or int.

As soon as I got mb5 I started taking out dragons. Everything else is too scary still. Shockwave is helping though.

I forgot to mark when I got the dungeon books, but I didn't get any particularly early. I got mordekainen around 3300' probably, since I jumped from around there to 4900' pretty quickly. The big plumet 1000' before then was staircase hunting and teleportation. Standard diving mage game for me. Beginning was perhaps a little slow though, but I think I made up for it by skipping the rest of the dungeon pretty quickly.

Another new thing I forgot to mention earlier is the new way things flicker in their colours. It's pretty funny. I like it for things like Saruman, but the flickering of say Great Hell Wyrms is a little distracting. I can't tell what dragon is what any more.
