The mountains seem to be a really good place for me to be since I'm not as exposed and I have an easier time getting monsters to hit the traps that I leave for them.

I wouldn't melee him much, though. Traps and ranged attacks should be your focus - also !Speed beats ?Phase because you can choose where you go (and lead him into your traps), and RAcid is important.

@Nick thanks for the advice...I'll have to order some speed potions: ) Or scum some lower levels for them. BTW does he summon at all. I know in V he doesn't but things are different in FA...

I found what I believed to be a themed level since I only found Orcs,Trolls and Giants. Sadly I had to bail since the level was pretty open, and I had a hard time fighting in the open, even while using traps. Thank God I had two traps to use. I did get at least another level while I was there though so not a total loss. But now I need a remove curse scroll since I have two curse amulets that I can't dump.

On 1.11.2010 01:42 Nick wrote:
That was probably a moria level - not a themed level as such, but they have cave-shaped rooms and mainly "cave-dwellers". They're particularly good for Necros and Priests with Dispel Evil, but pretty tough going for Rogues.

On 1.11.2010 01:53 Fendell Orcbane wrote:
Yep the level looked like a huge series of caverns, it was hard finding places where I could effectively lure the monsters into traps. I was also having a hard time with the water trolls, even with the Gondolin Lance. Are you playing a game right now, Nick?

On 1.11.2010 04:12 Nick wrote:
No, I'm not.

Water trolls are fairly tough. Also, rogues get extra benefits from using light weapons - it may be worth looking for a replacement.

On 1.11.2010 06:50 Fendell Orcbane wrote:
Well I get a lot out of using the Gondolin weapon...but as soon as a lighter one comes up I'll grab it. What benefits other than extra attacks does a Rogue get out of using a lighter weapon?

Rogues and Assassins get a bonus to skill the lighter the weapon.

What are you using as your main weapon? You don't appear to have anything with a particularly high damage output for where you are. I suspect Dethanc is actually your best general purpose weapon. Looks like you discarded/sold Totila at one point - wouldn't that have been useful?

What you want is an enhanced dice ego weapon - something like a 1d10 sabre of melting. Big dice make a huge difference in O variants. Forasgil is an excellent weapon for example. Also watch our for Whips of the Balrog - they may be a 'bad ego' but against non-fire resistant opponents there is little better.

I think most players skip these for those reasons and also for the fact that you usually have the max # of specialties you can receive at this point as in your case.

Nick has given Ungoliant a fixed item to lure adventurers to ND, but since I've never gotten it I couldn't tell you if it's worth the trek. Since I can tell you like FA, you really ought to visit Nan Dungortheb at least once... it is very atmospheric. Since you have a high stealth character you might have a different experience, but in my times there I was constantly being tracked and surrounded by all sorts of evil spiders and hounds. They stay just out of reach, constantly trailing and surrounding you, just waiting for you to dip below a certain % of your hitpoints or for you to bump out into a clearing to attack. Nick did a good job of making Nan Dungortheb *feel* like an evil place... I don't go there often because when I'm there I feel very stressed and scared, not for game mechanic reasons. Don't underestimate how much a burden the town merchants can take off the endgame. I found the Tumbar set! Sadly I'm too slow while wearing it: ( I took Morgoth on and while I had him down to 3*'s I ran out of Genocide scrolls and I didn't have any escapes at all. I hate that Rods can be drained in FA. So I ran...I feel like the way to win in any 'Band it to not take chances that you can't control. But the last tiem that a character got this close and took this long to win...Morgoth killed him:( I'm tryuing to avoid that this time. But FA Morgoth is tougher than V M that is for sure.

Morgoth is down! Honestly once I had enough genocide scrolls it was just a matter of using create doors and meleeing him to death. I'd phase away when I needed to heal or teleport to escape his summoned dragons. I did run out of genocide scrolls but with some teleportation and Teleporting away I managed to hang. I think that FA Morgoth doesn't do more damage but,he likes to summon and bores adjacent blocks so that you are open to the dragons that he summons. He even bores through doors. Knowing when to run is of the essence.
THe thing that I love about Angband in general is that you feel good having won because you have to play a flawless or almost flawless game to win: )

Congrats - Hobbit Rogue is seriously hard. What's next - new race/class, new variant, or back to V?

Hey, Nick
Thanks. I actually think that Hobbit Rogues are good, you just have to think sneaky. Which is why I saved Razorback to take Morgoth out with but stuck with other armors. I did try a high elf ranger and got killed pretty quickly. Honestly I might try to get a high Elf/ranger off just for the challenge. But I'm gonna try and take a break for at least a few days since I think I'm kinda addicted to Angband. As for V, I think that I'm going to mess around with FA and eventually some of the other variants since everyone plays V over and over. I'd rather encourage people that took the time to create new variants, by actually using their handy work.
