A Spectre Ultimate Winner. Mostly to see if it could be done. As a Sorceror, damage and utility stuff was easy; the hard part was managing hit points. This was my first visit to the void, so I was a little overprepared, using almost every dubious technique in the book. Started worshipping Melkor for Genocide, switched to Eru for the mana and possible life saving. Took Necromancy enough to get Undead Form, took Symbiosis enough for Use Major Powers. I only really used the mass summoning once, to deal with a Greater Wall Monster infestation on Nameless (I had forgotten about Sterilize), but the Teleport To was incredibly useful in the Void. I also took one point of runecraft for the circle of runes - incredibly useful! - and one point of summoning for the swarms of battle-scarred veterans/dwarven warriors (they're levelled wherever monsters are, and completely free). Being a spectre saved my life a number of times - being able to bail out into a wall was really useful. There are other, less challenging, ways to get this in the late game, though. I'd do the endgame a little differently if I'd realized that the Ring of Phasing let you breathe without air - I'd have made an artifact Elven Cloak, I think, to wear once I'd got it. In any case, Melkor was a pushover - just made a mass of runes, then phase doored away every time he got close. Manathrusts, cast healing every time he hit me, one Restore Mana, and splat.

Interesting that you had success with sea of runes; when I tried it, they were almost immediately removed by breath. Maybe I just got unlucky. What I did was to cast hellfire form out of LOS, but it took a while to whittle him down with that.

I don't think Melkor ever breathed at me; Hand of Doom and the like, sure, all sorts of things that did damage, but nothing that destroyed the runes in bulk. I was running on both Essence of Speed and Light Speed Jump, so that when he destroyed runes by walking on them I could just make more. With all my added spell levels from equipment, the six-mana Sphere+Protection spell gave me a circle of radius 10 or so, so it was very quick to refresh a large sea of protection. Other, weaker monsters did breathe fire at me (fire was the worst for getting rid of runes) but actually it was items that were more of a problem - if I fought some big summoner first, I could keep lots of runes around, but if I'd first had to deal with a few dragons, I couldn't lay new runes.

I do want to experiment with other ways of getting pass-wall, either Udun's Wraithform or Cloaks of Mist; seems like they might offer much the same convenience for escape and travel without the high base hitpoint penalty.

For some reason I thought I couldn't dump skill points into Stealth, which was why I had all those left. I'd considered dumping them into Spirituality (for the saving throw) or Thaumaturgy (in hopes of getting some cool wall-creation or slowing spell) but neither was really compelling. Stealth, though, might have allowed me to choose a different speed-versus-stealth tradeoff than slug-like. Extra speed and/or stealth would have saved me some genocides in the Void (which I was very free with). I wonder whether Charm would have worked on the hounds?
