You evade the attack!

Yes, 303hp down to 80, so evasion saved my life. Nothing like dying to an off screen Gachapin :( Pissed, off, I killed him, and the irony is he gave me the Breathe Fire mutation which allowed me to finish him off. Suckah!

Reward is a rand-art with chaos resist. Ah, well. Better late than never.

At first glance, 512 damage per round looks pretty good. Except its about half what my Tonberry was doing at CL29! Sigh ... These weaponmasters are too weak :)

I found Diamond Edge on the ground at DL32 while spanking Lord Borel, and it is even an ego! Ah well. Eventually, I'll be able to collect souls, at which point the plan is to enchant a vanilla axe, recall down to DL98, and then artifact it, and, if all goes well, signature it right after. I figure I can get a (+55, +55) or so weapon this way! Ah, should I live to see the day ...

So far, Crusaders Strike is proving disappointing. If I am berserking, I can't use it. If I kill my opponent with a single strike (95% of the monsters I meet fall into this category), then it does not work. If I am fighting something significant and need to heal, I'll generally take more damage then I would recover, so it is better to teleport and heal normally. Maybe it will prove more useful once heartier monsters start showing up ... Trolls for instance. Then I can teleport and heal on relatively harmless monsters. But trying the Strike out on Lord Borel or Jurt was just pure folly.

OK, I take it back. Crusaders Strike is uber powerful!!! Actually, Collect Soul is uber powerful, but too difficult to time. A full round of melee attacks kills just about any monster, so the combo is to use Crusaders strike once, then Collect Soul. So far, so good :D

Topped out at (+20,+23) for the moment. Still, 705 damage per round is admirable!

Great Hell Wyrm - 55
Behemoth - 64
Great Wyrm of Space-Time - 72 (you'll need RTime somehow)
Cyberdemon - 77.

That's all I can think of at the moment...

Lourph - 79 :)
GWoP - 90 :(
Caaws - 90 :(
GCWADL - 99 :(

So, Lourphs it is. Start with (0, +10). End with (+35, +45). From there, uniques, I guess, but that is tough, so just ?Art at that point and then signature.

On 12.12.2011 20:28 dzhang wrote:
What's so bad about Caaws? I think a pure melee like an Axemaster should be able to take them no problems... they only have 3400 HP, and their Invulnerability wears off at some point...

On 12.12.2011 21:18 chris wrote:
OK, a new axe, this time with a more favorable damage boost. I nearly died getting my last soul vs. Shuten-douji. With my AC below 70, he could very nearly kill me in a double move, though most of the time I could risk two rounds of melee vs. the guy and then teleport to try out Crusaders Strike. At the end, he wasted a couple rounds repositioning with the stupid pack AI that tries to make room for other pack members to attack. Yeah, a guy that hits for 10d11 x4 really needs the assistance of a black ogre!

My new axe is now (+16,+27) and I'm too fragile to go for anything deeper at the moment.

On 12.12.2011 21:20 chris wrote:
@Dave: Yeah, plus Crusaders Strike penetrates invulnerability. Perhaps they are worth a shot!

I just had a thought. With our new tweaked pricing formulas, it seems like Axemasters can get rich with Soul Absorption finagles, since anything above +10 starts getting cubically more expensive. Though you're probably past caring about money at this point...

Honestly, I would never think of such a thing! But thanks for the tip ... (He says after scumming 80 days to find a lochaber axe, and another 40 to enchant to (+1, +12)!!). The main limitation is that lochaber axes are uber rare. I'm just now starting to find a few, but I have 500k gold in my purse. Perhaps for other axemasters, this might be a problem?

[CL38:DL60] 07:00
A very loooong battle with a Hell Wyrm, me Crusaders Striking nearly every round. In the end, I got his soul, and now am at (+19, +30). I could probably do a couple more, but its a tad too risky for my tastes, what with my only detection being a couple of slow to recharge rods.

On 13.12.2011 00:23 Djabanete wrote:
9d6 + 30 = 61.5

3d8 + 30 + 15 = 58.5, not counting an extra blow. So you're basically wielding an improved Glaive of Pain, and that's before actually finding an ego or artifact Lochaber Axe or making it your signature weapon.

... Not bad!

Ah ... weapon downgrade. Since I can't handle the top of the Dragon's Lair, I'm handling the next best thing, which is that *&*@ black bat. At first he was scary, drawing forth the likes of a couple Dracoliches and a Dracolisk, while I lacked nether. But, in the piles and piles of treasure I found a scroll of acquirement. Imagine my joy when I got this nifty axe!!

So, damage takes a biff, but there are still souls to drain. Next recall down and that damn bat showed up again :)

On 13.12.2011 02:26 Djabanete wrote:
@Dave: Actually I was imagining if Chris was using the Glaive and comparing with that --- I hadn't seen your dump yet, so that was just coincidence :)

A rather disappointing axe, I must say. It does have kill dragon, so its not completely useless, and I tried grabbing souls with it but only seem to snag about 1 in 6 (I got 4 out of 23 or so) ... Plus, too much time juggling for levitation and no nether makes me sad, so I'm back to my defender. Hmmm ... damage keeps going down for some reason?

4 runs thru Nyogtha's hp before I finally captured his soul, but I was determined. He kept teleporting away and when I would find him again ... Full health. Oy! I really need regeneration myself, it seems.

But now, I'm just an ordinary human, wielding an ordinary axe.

For 1005 damage per round!!!!

Still trying to cover resistances, but its slow going. I tried to collect souls in R'lyeh, but nearly died :)

Now a Death axe is nice, and vampirism is way more useful then Crusader's Strike, so perhaps I'll just stick with this weapon a bit? I had an Order axe but it got fried.

I'm still chasing the tonberry, but closing in at 1113 damage per round. Aether hounds are nice tame L75 monsters, but I think I'm topping out at (+37,+38) on my axe.

Vlad nearly killed me as I forgot I swapped out dark resist. He had me down to 25hp, but I figured it was safer to polish him off then teleport, and was reasonably confident I could do the job.

I'm still sadly outclassed by Bloodthirsters, though. I can only manage about 3 stars off those guys. Sad, considering they are L54 monsters and I am L48!
