Rebalancing the Craft HM, and I think removing Building Up is all that is necessary. Early on, that spell is awesome for getting this build going, but by the end game, it is a bit too powerful. So, berserk is back ... And I'm still looking for a replacement for Polish Shield. Any thoughts?

The VM was ridiculously tough for me, but fortunately, I managed to get to a corridor and then fire bolts while confused. Either the corridor helped me pick the correct direction to shoot, or I just got lucky. But getting the loot afterwards was nigh impossible, and I almost gave up. Fortunately, I had purchased a wand of lightning balls earlier, and that enabled me to get the goodies (I had to teleport away after the kill or die to software bugs, so the return trek was problematic ...)

Still looking for a third attack, and I thought 18/50's on my Str/Dex would do the trick, but apparently not.

BTW, bow skills have been broken for I don't know how many releases, but they are fixed in 78 (not publicly available yet ... sorry).

5 stat raises to Str and Dex and still only 1 attack with Dr. Jones, or 2 with my mace of force. I finally cranked the calculation and saw that I would need at least 2 more stat boosts to pick up a 3rd attack, and that would require lucky rolls. 7 boosts (and CL30!!) for maybe 3 blows? I'm picking Zeus next time ...

Any who. I just went and got Zantetsuken, so problem solved.

Idea 1: Plasma Aura: temp Fire Aura + Lightning Aura buff.
Might be better in Chaos; Craft already has a million buffs. Not sure.

Idea 2: Recharging.
Any reason why Craft doesn't have this? I'd think it would be the first realm that should have this.

Idea 3: Wall Building.
Ever used Wands of Wall Building in Moria? Actually, since Cheng is the "have everything" variant already, I wouldn't mind seeing Wands of Wall Building :D

I'll probably add Recharging. Wall Building is more a Nature thing. I like the aura idea too, but you are right. Recharging is definitely a Craft talent! Thanks!

Just changing things up ... Its a fine spell, and in character, too. I just find that it is seldom used, that's all. Geez, even Minor Demigods level slowly, it seems.

I sold out for the Mimic's Treasure, barely surviving the curse barrage despite +11 speed at the time. It was worth it, as Himring gives needed nether resistance for the Barrow Downs (Clay Golems Hold Life).

Normally, I am happy with a single stat potion in the downs, but this guy got 7! Wow! 2 !Wis and 1!Chr make me sad, but OK. And some Int would have been nice, but still, I'm happy :D

In the biggest anti-climax of all time, I purchased a copy of Master's Notes at CL27 in the BM by selling all my goodies, and just barely made it. But ... I can't learn any new spells :(

So back to risky quest pursuits.

Why does The Hoard always show up in shoot posture? Well, see attached screenshot where The Hoard could not summon behind me to block my retreat. That was good for infinite gold, but I stopped at 220k (Too much risk of a fat finger death). Unfortunately, I did not pick Merchant's Friend for my L20 talent, so this is less useful.

I did finally manage to hit L29, so I could learn 1 new spell. 19% Haste? 6% Stone Skin? Resistance? Nope. Telepathy! I figure L30 will bring an Int boost and perhaps a few more spells to learn. We'll see. I'll be pissed if I level up and can't learn any new spells, but given my low Int, this is probable.

Hmmm ... Craft HM is now extremely weak, at least until the end game book is achieved. Even with Zantetsuken, damage is about 80/round after factoring accuracy and monster AC reduction, so the needle is my only viable option.

CL35 and I picked Int, so I can finally learn spells (though Mana Branding is out of reach). The Hell Wyrm I needled also dropped Gogo, so I gained 6 Int in the exchange!

Still seeking my first !Int. I've found over 25 stat potions ... sigh.

Things are pretty dicey at this depth. I've been playing with the option to disable monster in-fighting for so long I've forgotten how tough things can get. Every single level produces a Sky Drake explosion! Oy! I've had to tuck tail and run a number of times, and learned I really need to start carrying *Destruction*.

At the moment, damage output is about on par with a Mana Storm, which is what I was shooting for with this class. Unless force branding works, then I am slightly better (multiply damage numbers by .56 to account for 70% accuracy and 20% monster AC reduction ... add another 150 for force branding if it works. So between 500 and 650 effective damage).

Of course, this Rune Sword is a bit sick, but its still only about 60% as deadly as Chainsword, so I don't think it is too bad. I might tone it down a little, but it has taken around 6 hours of constant use to get it this far, so perhaps that is OK?

Julian was near impossible to kill, as he kept teleporting. I took over 40 stars off the guy during various encounters on myriad different levels before I finally got him. He responded by cursing me with a GWoP! Damn. First time I've seen that happen!

On 21.12.2011 23:18 chris wrote:
Ah, wait. I messed up the damage calcs a bit. Correct numbers should be 460 and 710 or so. Also, I notice the town service to compare weapons is not correctly handling force brands. The calc is:

mult * 1.5 + 2

It used to be

mult * 3.5

but that is too strong, of course!

On 22.12.2011 03:40 chris wrote:

On reflection, the Rune Sword felt too powerful, so I relented and scaled back the odds and top power a bit. In fairness, I read ?Mundanity on my current build (the only way to remove, btw), and this renders it useless.

So, my next best weapon is probably this Crusade scythe. Its got slay evil which my force brand converts into a nice 5x slay! 546 expected damage vs. evil, so while this is less, it is more often applicable. And demons and undead can expect 742 damage, so this is not a bad trade after all :)

Being slightly obsessive compulsive is not helping matters ... I must finish this level. I recalled down at 15m xp and am now at 18m xp, and still no end in sight. Wave after wave of Space Time Wyrms assault me, and once dispatched, I need to handle the Sky Drake army! Done, and I inch forward a bit to encounter ... Wave after Wave of Space Time Wyrms.

100+ artifacts found so far, but only maybe 40 on this level. Add in about 30 or so rings of speed. But still ... I ... must ... finish ... this ... level!!

The Glaive of Pain is very nice for this build too ...

OK, I seem to have over-estimated arts on this level before, but its still a lot. And rings of speed I am often picking up 2 at a time. Indeed, I've found 3 +10 and a +12. Also, a second +2 attack ring, but I won't need that.

Still no end in sight.

At least 150 more uniques remain, so while 25% is perhaps a slight stretch, I don't think it is too much of one. BTW, 13m for CL50 used to be Half Titan territory, so I may not have fully adjusted to the new xp system which seems to have raised the bar quite a bit.

It took 23m just to find the jewel. And a kobold hits L50 at 3m xp, but might not finish til 30m xp!

Well, I can't even get close enough to detect the problem, let alone deal with it. Whenever I move to see what all the fuss is about, suddenly 10 or so Space Time Wyrms come barreling my way, followed by 20 to 30 Sky Drakes. I'm probably over 200 rings of speed as they seem to just drop from heaven!

Start up Spell Power on the HM gives -1 Str/Dex/Con and +1 Int per chosen value. And +1 Spell Power, of course! Its hard to resist picking +4 spell power for me, though this really biffs your Con.

Boy, the game is damn freakin' hard at this depth. While I confess to failing Hera because she was too OP, the other failures have come from out of control monster spawning, be it greater dragons or unmakers.

There is no noticeable play difference between aggravating and not aggravating, so I might as well go with Chainsword. But, I think I better sprint for the Serpent and hope for the best, as I am waaaay too weak for this depth, and sure to die shortly.

Remarks:
[1] After having played with "Allow Hostile Monsters" turned off for so long, I now see this option is severely broken. I'm OK with monsters battling each other, but the fact that they can bring forth infinite summons needs to be addressed.

[2] Unmakers are too common with the new monster allocator. They seemed to be on almost every level, and I failed two quests because of them, both times feeling lucky to still be alive.

[3] Some of the Olympians are impossible unless you have a distance attack ... Best to ignore them. For me, Zeus was by far, the uber weakest of them all. Artemis was about 10x more deadly, and Hera, 100x (She Mana Storms nearly 1 in 1 and puts Nodens to shame ... At least Nodens won't breathe disintegration). After Hera, I left the rest alone. Old Hengband classics like Shuma-Gorath and Combat Echizen seem easy now. And old Angband classics like the Tarrasque? I doubt it makes the top 30 these days. I would have busted the Destroyer but could never get fewer than 5 or so wall breaking, passwall, uber deadly, destruction resistant monsters on my tail at any given time.

On 24.12.2011 02:09 dzhang wrote:
Congrats on the win Chris.

I also thought Unmakers were too common for Odysseus. Chain Summons are annoying, but manageable with Destruction spell. I agree that Zeus seems a bit too easy... Ditto with Hermes.

I disagree about Shuma-Gorath though... Odysseus very nearly died to him after being Antimagiced and Mana Stormed in quick succession. I teleported him away I think, but that would have been death if I failed to activate my Rod of Teleport Other!

I'm playing a Hermes spawn, and the net +5 to Stealth is huge.

On 24.12.2011 02:56 chris wrote:
Wait, isn't Hermes only net +3 stealth? Demigod gives -2 and Hermes +5 ...

I'm pretty sure I broke the game with my monster allocator changes, so I reverted them back to Hengband originals for the next release. Also, when monsters fight among themselves, summoning is no longer allowed (much like in the monster arena). However, if pets are involved, then summoning is OK (Hostile can summon at your pet, and your pet can summon at a hostile). So, this guy will be the last guy to chalk up 25m xp on a single level without scumming :)
