Having lost a number of promising Characters to trapdoors landing me in a bad place, or invisible enemies, I decided to try a perception based light combat build. It's quite effective. 6 grace means it's only 2k starting xp to get to smithing 11 and jeweler for 2x RoA +2, and 600 for an Elbereth that should remain effective well into the midgame. Sprinting kept me out of any trouble those two couldn't handle, until I could get my big guns, in the form of concentration and master hunter up and running. With 5 invested in melee, and 3 in archery, I now have up to +22/+20 to hit against common enemies with my current gear, and with a few lucky armor drops (thanks for the hat, Gorgol), I have enough defense to not take too much damage working up to full power if I don't get mobbed (which I can avoid by using corridors and swapping in my ring of wrath).

Of course, now that I'm not playing a dedicated smith character, I've found 3 forges by 400', which I mainly used for IDing bad jewelry, and making a few swaps. If I'd had this much custom equipment available for my last character, his fate may have been quite different.

On my to-buy list, some Will for Hardiness, some Stealth for Cruel Blow, Listen, maybe a useful song or two...

This looks nice. Will you be building up your melee/archery and evasion further in the medium term, or making this breadth of abilities more of a priority?

Things are going quite well, went with hardiness and crippling shot for the moment, and have been building up quite a hat collection. If I keep boosting my will, clarity might not be worth keeping, but true sight (with +2 perception!) and majesty are very very nice indeed. I'd been planning on buying majesty eventually, now eyeing that point of con instead. Also, the dex off the archery tree only requires 10 points, and flaming arrows could be quite useful against bigger nasties...

I really should pick up a song or two to use all that voice, as majesty makes elbereth a bit superfluous. Probably Trees for the extra archery range in darkness, and staying for big nasties that make it to melee.

I don't think that Majesty quite obsoletes Elbereth -- it makes monsters more likely to flee, but they will still go for you when injured, so it's nice to have the extra control from the song.

Continuing down, and starting to run into more and more trouble, especially with lack of elemental resists. The shield helps with fire, but I have to be very careful about fights around breathers. Had to take exchange places to get out of a nasty spot involving ringrakaur, several werewolves and a serpent breathing at me. Found an enchanted forge, but a nasty nether worm infestation kept me from using it for anything.

Well crap, screwed up royally vs a young cold drake... turns out shield of frost gives fire resistance, not frost. Dumb move - there were stairs easily reachable. Idiot that I am, I also missed my chance to dump after death - it was at 600', with max depth 650. Is there any good way to reconstruct/edit the dump, to reflect this?

Regarding the Cold-drake, they are just dragons without fire rather than dragons which do special cold damage, so the mistake may not have been relevant. Then again, Sapphire Serpents do breathe cold so that might be what you meant.

Similarly, Ruby Serpents breathe fire, if I'm not mistaken. ;)
