My first assassin smith to reach the throne room!

Started with low grace and high smithing to knock up some initial stealth gear. Then played quickly as an assassin to reach the depths and start forging my smithing kit. I then created the combat gear, with my masterpiece being 'Icicle'. I just one hit killed Gothmog with it! All the unrelenting horrors lasted just three rounds of combat each.

Morgoth is next...

7 rounds of combat equals my best with charge/knockback/opportunist. He didn't touch me.

Well that's embarrassing. Perhaps I should have just stabbed it rather than trying to break free...

Wow. I mean, to charge-knockback with a 1.0lb weapon you had to hit for 100 damage! How many criticals is that?! I guess you get two chances too, in case the first one doesn't do enough damage. I would've thought you'd have riposte to get in extra attacks, but I guess stuff doesn't live long enough to ever attack anyway!

On 2.4.2012 17:32 HallucinationMushroom wrote:
Oh man, I lost a good one to that too not long ago. The curse of the silmarils probably made it extra hard to break the trance-combo.

Sorry what I meant is this rapid attack/cruel blow effort equaled my charge/knockback/opportunist build for number of rounds Morgoth survived.

Was sadly very slack on the way up - fell through a false floor just because I went out of my way to kill stuff and on the resulting level got caught in a web. I should have stopped at that point and thought about it, but I kept hammering the key to break out when I could probably have just killed it still. At the moment I realised this I was stuck in the final trance...

Morgoth and Unrelenting Horrors were the only things that survived more than one round. Saying that I never took on a Nameless thing or a Silent Watcher this time around.

I was hoping to finish this with the longest trail of '!'s ever seen next to Carcharoth going down - darn it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I actually have a comment in my todo file which says:

- Spiders of gorgoroth, lurking horrors, shelob have damaging paralysis attacks. These can be chained multiple times

However, I wasn't aware of many (any?) case of this happening. How do you (or others) feel about this? I've already made Sil's version of paralysis not stack, since any attack breaks a trance, but it can still be chained by these three creature types. Is this just something which is reasonable? Should I remove this possibility? If the latter, then how should these creatures' attacks work?

On 2.4.2012 19:20 half wrote:
When using Rapid Attack it can also be useful to forge a weapon that is less than 1.0 lb. That way even with very low strength, there is no damage penalty. For example a Sindar with -1 Str can rapid attack with a dagger or a 0.9 lb Shortsword with no damage penalties.

I'm always been very afraid of being entranced...in fact my first winner almost died from being noticed by a spider of Gorgoroth, lucky for me he wasn't caught in a web.
I don't know how the Will vs. Entrancement works out number wise but the system doesn't seem too unfair...people just should invest in Will. But that is just my opinion...

On 2.4.2012 21:33 half wrote:
Yes, something I should add to my question is a comparison with being breathed on by a Great fire-drake which will basically kill anyone at short range without resistance. Entrancement definitely seems less dangerous than that and also requires melee range. Webs can make is a bit dicey though.

Psi, how many d12 were you typically doing with icicle? My guess would be something like 2x 6d12 or so with sharpness on the initial attack, then 2x 4d12 or so on the subsequent rounds (if any!).

Its funny that you mention Great Fire Drakes...I was entranced by one and I guess I got lucky that it didn't breath. Honestly I think that Great Drakes are as deadly than any uniques, because it seems like they have more hit points.

@half. I'm not sure what the penalty is for being in a web, but I suspect that with my melee skill I could still have killed the spider if I had attacked rather than tried to break free. I'm guessing that the curse is what prevented my attempts to get out - is that correct? I don't see a problem other than my sloppiness and choice of build.

I made Icicle 1lb, so that I'd get the extra side against Morgoth after quaffing a !Str.

You are way out with the criticals. Rapid attack only really kicked in against Great Drakes as there wasn't much that could take the first blow which was typically 11+ dice. Icicle is 2d12 (with the brand) and with an accuracy of 30 (melee) + 28 (assassination) + 7 (focused attack) = 65 with criticals for every 7 - 1 (finesse) - 2 (subtlety) = 5 means big, big damage. I often got over 100 damage with the first hit. Indeed the first round against Morgoth was about 102 + 65 for the two blows (fully buffed with d13).
