On the other hand, like all spiders they are territorial, and won't pursue you if you're out of line of sight. Thus you can normally avoid fighting them if you don't want to.

By the way, you were strong enough that you weren't getting your full strength bonus with the axe two-handed, so you'd only have dropped one damage side if using it with a shield. Coupled with your *superb* kite shield, that might have been worthwhile.
