Kaptain Kobold!!

One advantage that random artifacts have is in the Light slot, where my first Phial (found on L60) was: The Phial 'Dawnbringer' (+2 to stealth) {Sl;DkNtDi;Wr}. Those resists are a nice set, which is a shame since my second phial gives nice stat boosts (DE Lords reward).

Otherwise, I'm OK with rand-arts so far. Sun Sword was in DQI and only had a pval of 1, but any speed is good speed. My Merry and Pippin replacements give nice boosts to my casting stat which is always welcome, and I have pretty good resistance coverage so far.

The only replacement I found at L60 was the phial, so I'm headed back to the Dragon's Lair for more fun. I only took a timeout for the Barrow Downs since phial #1 had Nether resistance.

Early melee action, thanks to a nice dragon slayer! I'm still working on getting my stats up, but already have 4 blows which is really nice at this point since Pulverise is weak (but effective) damage and Psychospear is hugely uncastable. Add 48 damage per strike vs. dragons so nearly 400 damage/round.

RARGH! Galdabosh bash you!!

Nobody beats the speed of the kobold, and playing so fast, rand arts spawn like mad! I had a good amulet ruined by anti-magic, but this speedy replacement followed quickly on its heels.

I still want chaos and disenchantment resist, though. Where can I find those?

Well, I finally got a high tier quest reward which would have been Eternity. Instead, it was The Robe 'Vajra' (+7,+6) [2,+21] (+3) {StDxCn;AcElSoCaFe;Ag[FM}. Shame about both Antimagic and aggravate ...

I'm getting lots of StDxCn arts for some reason. In my test data, they are common but not crazy like this character is seeing. Along with this are an inordinate number of anti-magic arts as well, so that somewhat balances things out. And I could use more Wisdom, and always more speed ;)

I haven't seen a really good weapon yet, but Stormy is still alive so there is at least one good shot at glory. But I can't remember if I took quests or not. My last rand-art character did, and Stormy was my L38 quest. The low level generation really nerfed my sword as a result.

OK, that will most definitely do:

The Tulwar 'Lawbringer' (21d1) (+22,+26) (+4 to searching) {Sr/X*, L83}

The Weaponmaster says I do 665 to 665 damage versus evil. Gotta love that consistency.

Speaking of order weapons, one class that most definitely does not want to see this sort of stuff is the Mauler. Turning off criticals would be huge ... in a bad way!

The BM stocked a ?ArtifactCreation for 750k gp, so I had to sell nearly all my weapons and jewelry. So far, I've found the new artifacts to be quite powerful, but I've also been pushing my depth nearly all game.

So what should I use my ?Art on? I'm guessing the standard choice of a Diamond Edge but it is very unlikely that I can surpass my Lawbringer. Plus, there is DQII so perhaps that 750k gp could have been better spent?

I also found my first pair of boots of speed. I'll use them now since +8 base speed is way too low for this depth, but I hate to give up the stat boosts from my boots of Zeus. As expected, I think speed is the issue when playing rand-arts ...

A +4 harp? You aren't using that slot and if it picks up stats you'll be in good shape. The rest of your kit looks nice.

L50 in short order, thanks to the amazing power of the kobold. With this weapon, I am bashing evilness for 952 damage per round, the only element of variability being my melee accuracy.

But Uriel is a bit more challenging, and I had him on the ropes when both Gerard and Atlas marched on to the scene. Time to bail!

I'll look for a harp, but I don't think they go past +3. Also, I'm expecting Crimson or Railgun sooner or later. I now have 2 scrolls of artifact and can quest for a 3rd!

Here's another crazy (potential unpopular) idea.

For my combat characters, it seems that rings of extra attacks are required/expected. I'll even prefer them over rings of power in most situations. Ever have a character with 5 blows with Ringil and only dish out 320 damage per round despite maxed out stats/gear? I have, and it is quite disappointing!

I'd prefer the game combat system be balanced around 5 blows, not 7 or 8. 500 melee damage should be enough for the end game.

I'd rather rings of power be worn without hesitation!

So, what if we remove rings of extra attacks altogether? I feel a bit guilty about this, so perhaps we could add:

The Gloves of the Berserker (-12, +6) [2, -10] {+ 2 attacks}

These would be as rare as Genji and the Sniper, so would not be a gimme. They could grant from 1 to 3 blows just like rings, but would never be a guaranteed find (Currently, everyone can count on at least a +2 attack ring). They also gimp your accuracy and your AC (and I propose they can't be enchanted, just like the Kamikaze robe) and make the character decide between being able to dual wield (Genji is almost required for most characters) or to wear a good art (Fingolfin or Cambeleg) or to wear good defensive dragon gloves.

OK, tell me I'm nuts :)

You're nuts. Howabout limiting non-artifact rings to +1 or +2 attacks, and giving RoPs and/or Tulkas +attacks.

I am crazy! Rings of Attacks are on probation ... at least until I come to my senses. (Meaning they are still in there but I might frown if you wear them!)

So that means I shouldn't use my +2 attack ring ... Shame, cause I've wasted a lot of play time during which some 'zerker gloves could have spawned. I just found some sniper gloves, just as rare.

And also a *huge* gun! When's the last time somebody scored a rand-art with cold immunity?

Gothmog, Yog-sothoth and Azriel, all in a line! Perfect for my awesome psycho-spear, and I finally scored the Jewel. Bringing up the rear was Godzilla at full health ... I left him alone. Oremorj similarly seemed risky as he spammed line of sight to "splash me" with Cyberdemon summons. Scary when you have less than 900hp!

On 19.5.2012 01:49 chris wrote:

I just had a run in with Nodens! Man, I would normally just flee instantly, but Oremorj was nearby, and I decided to play spectator while those 2 duked it out. Nodens down to 1 star and I move in for the kill. Fail! He Heals, Mana Storms, Heals and he's back to 3 stars. I spent alot of mana using Dimension Door so I could lure Nodens next to Oremorj, so I couldn't risk Stopping Time for just 2 free actions.

Try again? Same story. So I finally had to take Oremorj as a consolation prize. Once he got wounded (3 stars) he could no longer damage Nodens faster than he could heal anyway. Nor could I for that matter, but I only have about 30% of the fire power of Oremorj with his 900hp rockets.

So for me, I don't think Nodens is killable. Or perhaps maybe I'd stand a better shot now that I restored my attacks back up to 7! I found these 'zerker gloves waaaay faster than I would have thought possible, so consider me lucky. Still, they cost me about 50 AC and 6% melee accuracy. I swapped out 8 points of speed to help out, but my AC is still a tad too low for the big melee hitters.

Now, if I could catch Nodens at 1 star and me at full sp and successfully Stop Time, I might be able to do that 1 star in 4 rounds of attacks. But I don't think I'll have another shot.

Its getting so I should make a run for the Serpent. The longer one plays, the more likely is death. Especially for a tiny kobold!

GCV on L94 was good for a bunch of artifacts, but I had to recall once my inventory was full. Shuffling, I manage AC 199 despite the 'zerker gloves and lack of shield. Thank goodness for Stone Skin!

I just need a bit more speed, I guess. Base speed +23 is a tad too low for the big guy.

Saving Skill: -1 (Race) + 88 (Class) + 8 (Personality) + 17 (Wis) = 112.

Statue Check: 1d125 >= 112 => Statue! That's still over 11% odds ... I didn't realize the odds were so high. It seems only Priests and Sorcerers can really be safe without using Antimagic.
