Wow! This has been a most amazing start! I better not mess this up ;)

I think I'll jump in the Barrow Downs as soon as I can locate enough identify, skipping the Logrus Master and the Vault, of course. I'd certainly like to go for a Sting replacement, but with my awful stealth, I really can't risk it.

462hp already? Geez, a warrior would be happy with that ;)

22.4 Mxp to go ...

And still, I dive. Current quest is for 8 Juggernauts of Khorne, but that won't stop me!

I must admit that Judge Fear was tough, especially when he opened with summoning an Iron Lich!

I'm parked at L50 of the Anti-melee caves, recall scumming with my amazing Enlightenment weapon. (Bull Gates paused my quest dive). When what should I see, but a book of power, red, and shiny! In a vault of course, but I'll just destruct ... and destruct ... and destruct ... and destruct.

Man, destruction ain't what it used to be, and I unfortunately had a really hard time getting the book. A Great Wyrm of Balance and Thuringwethil picked up immunity, as did a Dracolisk. *None* of these are manageable with my ~100hp offensive spells. Monsters that deal 80% of my hp in a single move are no match when I only do 1 to 2% of their hp. That just ain't fair!

So, I had to do quite a bit of luring and teleporting too.

Oh, and a pack of Quantum Dots was squatting on my book. And Eibra was sleeping 1 square off ... Phooey. It took about 20 minutes to get, but it was worth it, me thinks. I had to spot the balance wyrm line of sight for a teleportation, and that was risky.

Now, how much xp do I need for L40? Heck, I can barely wait for L32 and my magic rocket!

Back to the quest dive, and Bull Gates fell easily to my rockets and distintegrate. It was sort of fitting that he followed the Internet Exploder quest :)

Sleipnir and the King in Yellow were no bother, but next came an amazing Bubble Vault! *Destruction* is surely nerfed in Chengband, but still rather useful. I managed boots of speed +7, a ring of speed +6, a second wand of rockets, and a few artifacts as well. The speed is what counts!

On 19.6.2012 19:10 Djabanete wrote:
IMO the best way to nerf *Destruction* but still let it keep its identity is to make the radius a bit variable.

On 19.6.2012 22:50 chris wrote:
That's a great idea ... But Hengband already does this!

The nerf is completely analogous to how Genocide/Mass Genocide work: Monsters get a saving throw. Occasionally, when a monster makes a save, they become immune.

[CL34:DL52] 06:55
23 Great Venom Wyrms? How the heck can I swing that?

Well, I managed 3 last time before running out of fire power. If I try to lean on Eat Magic at this low level, I will quickly blow up my rods. And I really need at least 2 runs thru my spell points just to kill 1. So I guess I'll just kill what I can and then recall to recharge my rockets, hoping I don't make a silly mistake and die a noxious death!

On the plus side: Perhaps I can level up for the Mana Storm?

On 20.6.2012 00:17 chris wrote:
[CL37:DL52] 08:04
I've managed as many as 5 Venom Wyrms ... I really think if I sold out I might ... just might ... be able to kill 23 in a single go. To do this, I need 124,200hp of offense, which is a lot even though my best spell currently does 233 for 25sp. Figure 40 or so runs thru my mana.

And as if that were not bad enough, I just teleported out of trouble to land in an empty room near a big vault. Out pops Combat who then spams a double rocket on my sorry butt. I survived, but initiated a teleportation frenzy since I had no healing at all! And with 18 venom wyrms about (and Jack of Shadows) I really had trouble hanging on for recall to kick in. So, this is risky, but I think Combat Echizen at L52 is a bit unusual (and highly unfair!).

Hey Chris! I've thought about something similar before with Chaos Warrior for max Logrus Breath damage. The spell power from High Mage might make it more viable, but Beruthiel would tilt it again! Probable max:

HP: 52d20 = 546, say 120 life rating for 655. 600 from max CON. +75 Unyielding. Total 1310. +25 spell power, or x38/13 = 3829 damage Logrus Breath!

On 20.6.2012 00:46 dzhang wrote:
Actually, would Blood Mage be better with their Blood Rite ability?

13 Hades, +5 BM, +1 Mighty/Patient = 19
52d19 = 520, with 120 life rating would be 624. +600 CON, +75 Unyielding. 1299 HP. +32 spell power (Beruthiel and Blood Rite), x45/13 = 4497 damage. I think we have a winner!

On 20.6.2012 01:04 dzhang wrote:
BTW, Chris, how would you feel about a "Buy and destroy all" shop option? I often find myself doing this for !oCCW in the late game, and I'm of the opinion that anything tedious but useful should be (1) nerfed to be less useful, or (2) automated to be less tedious.

On 20.6.2012 01:12 chris wrote:
Ah, but Chaos Warriors and Blood Mages pay a lot for the Logrus Breath for exactly that reason. So while the BM or CW might breathe for more damage, they will be less deadly than the HM.

I may have made the BM costs a bit too high, though, so I think I'll move them down to CW levels.

I was tempted to scum for a high life rating with this guy, but my first NewLife gave 104% life with 18/130 con ... So I may only have slightly more HP than Larry Logrus did. Though I will have Spell Power that he didn't! Of course, monsters are quite stupid in Hengband so I really can't compete with Larry for overall power ...

On 20.6.2012 01:19 chris wrote:
"Buy and destroy all" sounds OK ... I don't really have too many issues with !CCW these days, so I'm wondering if healing isn't too common.

On 20.6.2012 02:08 dzhang wrote:
(BTW, for Buy and Destroy, you should list the price for doing so.)

I'm also trying a Demeter Blood Mage who's going Chaos/Sorcery->Craft. The idea is that I'll make do with Demeter's healing at low levels, and at higher levels, I'll only be using Staff and Rods of Healing (well, plus potions. But no spell-based healing). So, that's going Sacred Vitality -> Demonic Grasp.

It should be OK, I think... at CL 30, that's 5d10=27.5 healing. Double from Sacred Vitality, and half from Blood Mage, so 28. 5x better than Clear Mind.

I've killed 116 Venom Wyrms before I finally figured out how I could kill 23 in a single trip down (see attached screenshot). The key is regeneration and beam of gravity, combined with a little bit of earth works.

But, being a Hades spawn, I really need some way to come up with my *huge* xp requirements. I think I'll at least spam Venom Wyrms for L40 and the Mana Storm, since I am unlikely to get such a nice quest again!

Right at the 10 hour mark ... and a mere 4.6 Mxp. Now, I need to train my Mana Storm down to 14% fail and it is time to move on!

[CL40:DL52] 10:26
Quest complete! With my amazing 566hp Mana Storm for 37sp, those Venom Wyrms finally dropped. In the end, I killed 170 or so, which is mildly scummy but really, there is no way I'm going to get the requisite experience otherwise. The downside is that I must have spawned every single replacement amulet at L52 which is far from ideal (Yup ... Those Venom Wyrms dropped 9 artifact amulets!)

14% fail mana storm is still high but livable.

Re: Buy and Destroy: It would be an improvement, but I think a bigger improvement would be if shops (besides the BM) always stocked the same things in unlimited supply.

There's nothing more frustrating than not being able to buy out the shop because the idiot shopkeeper is carrying a million *Remove Curse* or *Identify* scrolls!

On 20.6.2012 19:13 dzhang wrote:
Hm, I've thought about that too, but then the question becomes which things should be in unlimited supply, and how that impacts gameplay.

Things that definitely should be unlimited supply:

Rations of Food, Arrows (+0,+0), Bolts (+0,+0), Iron Shots (+0,+0), Flasks of Oil, ?oRemoveCurse, !oCLW

Things that definitely should NOT be in unlimited supply:

?o*RemoveCurse* (I'd actually vote for this to be removed from shops other than BM entirely.)
!oRestoreXXX (already have healers for Restoration in town)

Things that are arguable:

!oHeroism, !oCSW, !oCCW, !oRestoreLife, 1st and 2nd spellbooks, ?oPhaseDoor, ?oTeleport, _oPerception, _oTeleportation

Me being me, I try to err on the side of "not too easy", so I'd file everything in "arguable" under limited supply.

I need to think a bit about the Buy Out and Unlimited Stocking options. I was actually thinking of going the other way with regard to certain town items (like scrolls of teleport). It seems ridiculous that casters with the spell still prefer/need to carry huge stacks of scrolls ...

A quest for 24 Great Wyrms of Many Colors? I know what you are thinking: Captain Chaos, you have triple immunity! What are you bitching about! Well, at the time I had *no* immunity and even with triple immunity, that leaves 2 holes for big breaths. Pretty risky when fire goes for 550 and I have ~900hp. So I burned something like 21 !Resistance to do the quest ... sigh. I also burned a _Healing on my first attempt at recharging. And about 6 !Healing too ...

The reward was enough xp for L42 and a couple immunity artifacts. I had my *Ac armor sitting at home and can't resist wearing it despite the encumbrance penalty.

Now, let's see what is lurking at L64.

Nothing! I was using Teleportation plus Peerless Tracker to explore, so yeah, it was a needless death ...
