Earlier today I was a sort of sad about all my Hador failures, but seeing Scatha's friendly competition spured me on. I put on some doom and got into Serious Mode.

I took throwing mastery early on this time, I'm not sure if it was the difference but I did get a hell of a lot of use out of throwing, so perhaps it was. Same general strategy as usual, but picked up vanish because I actually wanted to win this time. Fairly easy after that, with some nice finds helping out (amulet of con!).

Very nice, congratulations!

And (correct me if I'm wrong) it looks like you were playing a melee character who just used stealth to choose fights rather than a primarily stealthy character. There can be a "stealthless" challenge in the future, but for now the House of Hador has its first winner!

Nice one! I laughed when I saw (Wolf-Bane) in your list of abilities.

I'm actually impressed at how many abilities you took in the early game (before 700ft). Usually I find that dumping that much XP into abilities instead of skills makes it harder to survive. I guess I need to try harder! :)

PS I've only recently started using Song of Silence, and it is _really_ good. I see you used it to great effect here!

Scatha: Thanks. Yes, stealth was mostly for avoiding things with nasty status effects and breaths (HWsSdD) and just generally to make things a little easier, though once I got to 950' I went into more of a stealth mode, trying to collect consumables and to do 1000' in a very cautious manner.

debo: wolf-bane is awesome. :) Only 1000XP to never have to worry about C again, I was actually happy to see Warg packs.

Around ~350/400 I was feeling pretty good with a defender longsword and a (-1) [0,1d7] kite shield, and decent ranged so I wasn't so concerned about needing to raise melee/evasion much. The things I got around that point all increased my survivability and damage output quite a bit anyway.

Silence is one of my standard things for the throne room, makes it much easier to take things on one by one, I kind of wonder if it could work for a very unstealthy character in this way. After Psi mentioned he liked it for the silrun and I tried it last game and this, and yeah it helps a lot, I might be able to ascend a pacifist if I put it to use like that.

We haven't seen many people taking the Bane ability, despite how fun it is, so maybe it is too weak? It would be good to see a bit more play for it.

I should add that Bane helps with *all* rolls against the foe. If you have Wolf-bane and a +4 bonus, then you get +4 to Stealth against it, +4 to Perception to detect it with Listen, +4 to Melee, +4 to Evasion, +4 to Will rolls, +4 to Song... You even get the bonus to escaping webs if it is Spider-bane. It really is a big deal.

On 16.8.2012 04:30 clouded wrote:
Yeah, I don't think it needs to be buffed, along with the things you mention it also isn't based on perception so it doesn't require a big investment for good bonuses.

I think it's underused because: it mainly works in a narrow band of depth and avoidance is usually the best solution to monsters difficult for your build, and investing in stealth or other things works on everything.

Probably the main reason people would get it is to lead to master hunter, which I plan to try for my finarfin win.
