Well, 209 damage, what can we say? :)

What did you use to kill Morgoth, since it seems 'Critical Hit' was forged an age after ...?

I used Delmereth and I had an amulet with sharpness at the time.

That grace/con trick on the identification helmet is really cute for smithing. I'm gonna steal that!

Had to deliberately stop at one silmaril as smithing would have been too annoying on the way back up otherwise.

What was your peak Smithing skill?

I got up to 61 for smithing. The masterpiece was around 80/81.

Would you have been better off with a dagger? It is normally very difficult to do better with one, but maybe given your extra damage bonuses. You would have been on d14s instead of d17s, could have had Strength of zero (or lower!) instead of 4, and would have had slightly better criticals. I'm not sure.

On 12.8.2012 15:35 debo wrote:
Hmmmn... I just went into wizard mode and created an identical character w/ an identical shortsword at the same # of damage sides etc. Took a few swings at things, it was pretty fun.

Then I created a (+3, 1d7) sharpness+frosty dagger at 0.4lb. I sat next a cold drake and did focus-attack + assassination, and the game crashed! lol! (Maybe a buffer overrun on the number of '!'s next to my attack description? :D)

I was going to collect some data on what might be better on average (you can do this with math of course, but it's not as fun) but I lost all the stuff I made :) I'll try again later.

On 12.8.2012 16:37 Psi wrote:
From the maths, I think the shortsword is better than the dagger.

I could have had less strength by the end with a dagger, but I didn't switch to a stabby style until deep in the depths before which I was using Anguirel and charge for which the strength was key.

On 12.8.2012 16:47 Scatha wrote:
I quite enjoy the number crunching. ;)

Asymptotically the shortsword gets a d17 for hitting by 5, for an average of 3.6 damage sides per increase by 1 in melee. The dagger gets a d14 for hitting by 4.4, for an average 3.41 damage sides per marginal point in melee. So ignoring the ability to put points of Strength elsewhere, the shortsword is definitely better.

Say you managed to get 4 points in Dexterity instead of the 4 in Strength (I'll ignore the fact that you're at the stat cap). That's an extra 8 to hit (with Assassination). Using the shortsword, with Focused Attack against a sleeping foe, you'd average I think hitting by 88, for 335 damage sides. With the dagger it would be 96, for 342 damage sides. So I think the dagger might just win in that analysis. Of course in practice you couldn't turn those four points of Strength into Dexterity, and I guess the shortsword is slightly better.

I can't believe that the stat cap has come into force!

Psi: did you know 20 was the limit? Did you take that into account?

On 16.8.2012 10:07 Psi wrote:
@half. I actually discovered the stat cap with Bredrimor when I created a smithing kit made of +Grace items.

This time I was aiming for 20 Dex, but actually overshot and hit 21, so went back and reforged an item or two (which is why I needed to put +Str on my weapon).
